“ But the doctor said … ” I began . “ Doctors are fools ! ” he cried . “ My hands are shaking . I need it . ” I was afraid of him , so I brought one glass . He drank it all . “ The doctor wants me to stay in bed for a week , ” he said . “ I can’t do that . They’ll give me the black spot before then . They want my sea chest , Jim . I was first mate on Flint’s ship , and I’m the only one who knows the place . Flint gave it to me when he was dying . ” Captain Flint was the most terrible pirate that ever lived , and I shivered at his name . “ If they give me the black spot , ” he went on , “ or if you see Black Dog again , or the seaman with one leg , Jim , him most of all , then ride to that doctor . Tell him to bring his men , and he’ll catch the whole of Flint’s crew . ” “ But what is the black spot , captain ? ” I asked . “ It’s a warning , mate . I’ll tell you if they send it . ” Then he fell asleep . That night my father died . For the next few days I was busy with the funeral and full of sadness , and I did not think about the captain at all . III . The Black Spot On the day after the funeral , at about three o’clock on a cold and foggy afternoon , I was standing at the door . Suddenly I saw somebody coming slowly along the road . He was blind , and he tapped the ground in front of him with a stick . He wore a green shade over his eyes and nose , and an old sea cloak with a hood . I never saw a more frightening figure in my life . “ Will any kind friend help a poor blind man ? ” he called in a strange , sing - song voice . “ I lost my eyes fighting for my country . Where am I now ? ” “ You are at the Admiral Benbow inn , Black Hill Cove , ” I said . “ Give me your hand , my kind young friend , ” he said , “ and lead me in . ” I held out my hand , and his fingers closed on it like iron . “ Now , boy , ” he said , “ take me to the captain . ” “ Sir , I don’t dare , ” I said . “ Take me to him now , or I’ll break your arm ! ” He twisted my arm so hard that I cried out . His voice was cold , cruel and ugly , and it frightened me more than the pain . I led him into the parlour , where the captain sat alone with his rum . “ When he can see me , cry out , ‘ Here’s a friend for you , Bill , ’ ” said the blind man . I did what he said . The captain looked up , and the rum seemed to leave him at once . He looked sick with fear . He tried to stand , but he did not have the strength . “ Now , Bill , sit where you are , ” said the blind man . “ I can’t see , but I can hear a finger move . Business is business . Hold out your left hand . Boy , take his hand by the wrist and bring it near my right hand . ”
