We both obeyed . I saw him put something into the captain’s hand , and the captain’s fingers closed on it . Then the blind man let me go . He ran out of the room surprisingly fast , and I heard his stick go tap , tap , tap down the road . The captain opened his hand and looked at it . “ Ten o’clock ! ” he cried . “ Six hours . We can still beat them ! ” He jumped to his feet . But then he put his hand to his throat , stood swaying for a moment , and fell to the floor . I ran to him and called for my mother , but it was too late . The captain was dead . I never liked the man , but I burst into tears . It was the second death in our house in a few days . Then I told my mother everything that I knew . The captain’s friends were coming for his chest , and we were in great danger . We ran through the fog to the nearest village for help . But when the people there heard the name of Captain Flint , they turned pale . Nobody wanted to come back with us . In the end one young man agreed to ride to Dr Livesey’s house for help . The others gave me a loaded pistol , and that was all . “ If none of you dare , Jim and I dare , ” said my mother . “ We’ll go back and open that chest . That money is ours . ” We walked home in the dark and locked the door behind us . On the floor near the captain’s hand there was a small round piece of paper . One side was black . This was the black spot ! On the other side somebody had written a short message : “ You have till ten tonight . ” Just then our old clock began to strike . We both jumped , but it was only six o’clock . We still had four hours . The key to the chest was on a string round the captain’s neck . I did not want to touch him , but I found it and took it . IV . Blind Pew We carried a candle up to the captain’s room and opened the chest . It smelled of tobacco and the sea . On top lay a good new suit , then four fine pistols , a bar of silver , an old Spanish watch and some beautiful shells . Under an old sea cloak we found a packet wrapped in oilskin , a cloth that keeps out water . Next to it was a bag of gold coins . “ I’m an honest woman , ” said my mother . “ I’ll take only what he owes us , not a penny more . ” She began to count , but it was slow work , because the coins came from every country in the world . When she was halfway through , I suddenly held her arm . Through the cold , still air I heard a sound that made my blood freeze . It was the tap , tap of the blind man’s stick on the frozen road . The tapping came nearer , and somebody tried our door . For a long moment everything was silent . Then the tapping went away again .
