A moment later we heard a long , low whistle from the hill . “ I’ll take what I have , ” said my mother , and she jumped to her feet . “ And I’ll take this to make the count right , ” I said , and I picked up the oilskin packet . We ran out of the house . The fog was lifting , and the moon was shining . My mother was weak with fear , and near the little bridge she said she was going to faint . With great difficulty I helped her down to the bank and pulled her under the edge of the bridge . Then I crept up the bank to watch . Seven or eight men came running along the road , and the blind man was with them . “ Down with the door ! ” he shouted . They broke into the inn , and I heard them running up the stairs . “ Pew , Bill’s dead ! ” one of them called from the window . “ And somebody has opened his chest ! ” “ Is it there ? ” roared the blind man . So his name was Pew . “ The money’s here , ” said the man . “ Never mind the money ! I mean Flint’s paper ! ” “ We can’t find it anywhere , ” said the man . “ It’s the people of the inn , ” cried Pew . “ It’s that boy ! Go and find them , you fools ! ” The men searched the house and the yard , but they did not look under the bridge . Then there was another whistle from the hill , and the men wanted to leave . Pew was furious . “ You’d be as rich as kings ! ” he shouted . “ And you’re afraid to look for it ! ” Suddenly we heard horses on the road . The pirates ran in every direction and left Pew alone . He tapped along the road with his stick , crying , “ Johnny , Black Dog , don’t leave old Pew ! ” In his fear he ran the wrong way , into the middle of the road . The horses came round the corner too fast to stop , and Pew fell under them . When the riders got down , he was already dead . The riders were officers of the King . They were hunting smugglers , and they had heard about a strange ship in the next bay . Their leader was Mr Dance . He helped me to carry my mother to the village , and then he listened to my story . I showed him the packet , and he agreed to take me to Dr Livesey at once . When we arrived , the doctor’s house was dark . His servant told us that he was having dinner at the Hall with Squire Trelawney . A squire was a rich man who owned most of the land in a district . So we rode on to the Hall . V . The Map and the Ship The squire was a big , tall man with a red , friendly face . He and the doctor listened to my story with great interest . “ Flint ! ” cried the squire . “ He was the worst pirate that ever sailed the seas . The Spanish were so afraid of him that I was sometimes proud he was an Englishman . ” “ Well , ” said the doctor , “ perhaps this packet shows where Flint buried his treasure . Would it be much ? ”
