VI . Long John Silver Bristol was full of ships from every part of the world . The squire met us , dressed like a sea officer . “ We sail tomorrow ! ” he said happily . After breakfast he gave me a note for Long John Silver . I found his inn near the harbour . Its name was the Spy - glass , and it was full of seamen . Silver was easy to see . His left leg was cut off close to the hip , and he carried a crutch under his left arm . He moved about on it as quickly as a bird . He was very tall and strong , with a face as big as a ham . It was plain and pale , but clever and smiling . For a moment I was afraid that he was the seaman with one leg from my dreams . But he was clean and friendly , and he did not look like a pirate at all . “ So you’re our new cabin boy , ” he said , and he shook my hand warmly . “ I’m very pleased to see you . ” Just then a man at the back of the room jumped up and ran out of the door . I knew his face at once . “ Stop him ! ” I cried . “ It’s Black Dog ! ” “ I don’t care who he is , ” said Silver . “ He hasn’t paid ! Harry , run and catch him . ” Then he turned to an old sailor . “ Morgan , you were drinking with him . Who was he ? ” “ I don’t know , sir , ” said Morgan . “ Black Dog ? ” said Silver . “ I never heard the name . Oh , what will the squire think of me ? ” He seemed very angry and very honest . Harry came back without Black Dog , so Silver and I walked together to the squire’s inn . At the inn he told the whole story to the squire and the doctor , and every word was true . I liked him very much , and I trusted him completely . That afternoon we went on board the Hispaniola , and we met Captain Smollett . He was a sharp , serious man , and he did not look happy . “ I’ll speak plainly , sir , ” he said to the squire . “ I don’t like this voyage . I don’t like the men . And I don’t like my first officer , Mr Arrow . ” The squire went red with anger . The doctor asked the captain to explain . “ This was supposed to be a secret voyage , ” said the captain . “ But the men know more than I do . They know about your map and the treasure . They even know where the island is . ” “ I never told a soul ! ” cried the squire . The doctor and I looked at each other . We knew who talked too much . Then the captain asked to keep all the guns and gunpowder near the cabin , far from the men . The squire agreed , but not happily . He did not like Captain Smollett after that , but the doctor did . VII . The Apple Barrel We sailed early the next morning . As the sailors pulled up the anchor , the heavy iron hook that holds a ship in one place , they sang the captain’s old song , “ Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest . ” Mr Arrow was often drunk , and nobody knew where he got his drink . One dark , stormy night he disappeared , and we never saw him again . So Job Anderson did his work , with the help of Israel Hands , the coxswain . The coxswain was an experienced sailor who often steered the ship .
