I went quickly to Dr Livesey . “ Doctor , let me speak , ” I whispered . “ Take the captain and the squire down to the cabin , and then send for me . I have terrible news . ” A few minutes later I told them everything , and they all thanked me . “ Captain , you were right , and I was wrong , ” said the squire . “ I’m a fool . ” “ We can’t turn back now , ” said the captain . “ If I give that order , they’ll attack us at once . So we must go on and wait . How many men can we trust ? ” We counted . There were the squire , the doctor , the captain , Redruth , Hunter , Joyce and me . Seven of us against nineteen of them . “ And Jim can help us most , ” said the doctor . “ The men aren’t careful when he’s near . ” I felt very young and very helpless . VIII . The Man of the Island In the morning I looked at the island for the first time in daylight . It was covered with grey woods , and strange rocks stood up out of the trees . From that first moment I hated Treasure Island . There was no wind , so the men had to pull the ship into the harbour with the small boats . The air was hot and smelled of rotten leaves . The men were angry and lazy , and they grumbled about everything . Only Silver worked hard , and he kept them calm . “ If I give one more order , they’ll attack us , ” said the captain quietly . So he gave the men the afternoon on the island . Thirteen men went in two boats with Silver , and six stayed on the ship . Then I had a foolish idea . At the last moment I jumped into one of the boats and hid under a seat . “ Is that you , Jim ? ” called Silver from the other boat . “ Keep your head down . ” Our boat reached the beach first . I jumped out and ran straight into the trees . “ Jim ! Jim ! ” shouted Silver behind me , but I did not stop . At first I was happy to be free . Then I heard voices , and I crept closer through the trees . It was Silver , and he was talking to Tom , one of the honest sailors . “ Tom , I’m your friend , ” Silver was saying . “ Join us , or it will be too late . ” Suddenly there was a long , terrible scream far away across the island . Then there was silence . “ John , what was that ? ” cried Tom . “ That ? Oh , I think that was Alan , ” said Silver calmly . “ Alan ! ” said Tom . “ He was a good sailor . John Silver , you’re no friend of mine . You can kill me if you want , but I won’t join you . ” And he turned and walked away . Silver threw his heavy crutch after him . It hit Tom in the back , and he fell . Silver was on him in a moment with his knife . I will not say more about it . Everything went round and round in front of my eyes , and I almost fainted . When I could see again , Silver was cleaning his knife on the grass . Tom lay still on the grass . I turned and ran as fast as I could .
