I . Mr Fogg and His New Servant In the year 1872 , a man called Phileas Fogg lived at number 7 , Savile Row , in London . He was about forty years old . He was tall and handsome , with fair hair and a calm face . He was rich , but nobody knew where his money came from . He had no wife and no children , and he did not seem to have any friends . He was a member of the Reform Club , a large , quiet club for rich men in the centre of London . Nobody knew much about Mr Fogg , because he never talked about himself . He spoke very little , and he never seemed to hurry . Yet he was never late for anything . He knew the map of the world very well . Yet nobody ever saw him leave London . Every day of his life was exactly the same . At half past eleven in the morning he left his house and walked to the club . He always took the same number of steps . He ate his breakfast and his dinner at the club , and he read the newspapers there . In the evening he played whist , a card game , with the same five men . At midnight he walked home and went to bed . He did not play to win money . When he won , he gave the money to the poor . Mr Fogg lived alone with one servant , and he expected a lot from that servant . On the morning of the second of October , he sent his servant away . The young man’s mistake was small . He brought his master’s shaving water at eighty - four degrees , and not at eighty - six . Now Mr Fogg was sitting in his armchair and watching the clock . A new servant was coming that morning . At twenty - nine minutes past eleven , a man of about thirty came into the room and bowed . He had a round , friendly face , blue eyes and strong shoulders . “ You are French , I believe , and your name is John ? ” said Mr Fogg . “ Jean , sir , if you don’t mind , ” the man answered . “ Jean Passepartout . In French the word means a key that opens every door . People gave me the name because I can always find my way from one job to another . I have had many jobs . I was a singer in the streets and a rider in a circus . I was a fireman in Paris too . But I left France five years ago , and now I want a quiet life . People say that you are the quietest man in England . So I came to you . ” “ Passepartout suits me , ” said Mr Fogg . “ What time is it by your watch ? ” Passepartout took a huge silver watch out of his pocket . “ Twenty - five minutes past eleven , sir . ” “ You are four minutes slow , ” said Mr Fogg . “ But no matter . From this moment , twenty - nine minutes past eleven in the morning , on Wednesday the second of October 1872 , you are in my service . ” Then Mr Fogg stood up , took his hat and left the house without another word .
