But Mr Fogg did not wait . He walked along the harbour and looked for a boat . At last he met the owner of a small , fast sailing boat called the Tankadere . His name was John Bunsby . “ Can you take me to Yokohama ? ” Mr Fogg asked him . “ It’s a long way , and the sea is dangerous at this time of year , ” said Bunsby . “ But why go to Yokohama ? The big American steamer to San Francisco doesn’t start there . It starts from Shanghai , and it stops at Yokohama on the way . Shanghai is only eight hundred miles from here . ” “ When does the steamer leave Shanghai ? ” “ On the eleventh , at seven in the evening . That gives us four days . With good luck and a good wind , we can get there . ” “ I will pay you a hundred pounds a day , ” said Mr Fogg . “ And if we arrive in time , you will get two hundred pounds more . ” “ Agreed , ” said the sailor . Mr Fogg left some money with the police and asked them to look for Passepartout . Then he turned to Fix . “ You also missed the Carnatic , sir . Would you like to come with us ? ” Fix was surprised , but he accepted . He did not want to lose his man , but it felt strange to be his guest . The Tankadere left Hong Kong at three in the afternoon . For two days the wind was good , and the little boat flew over the water . Then the sky grew dark , and a storm began . The waves were as high as houses . Bunsby wanted to stop in a port , but Mr Fogg said , “ No . We will go on . ” Aouda sat quietly on the deck in the rain and was not afraid . The storm lasted all night . In the morning the wind was calmer , but they had lost many hours . On the eleventh , at seven in the evening , they were still three miles from Shanghai . And then they saw the big American steamer . Black smoke was coming out of its chimney . It was already leaving the port . “ Signal to it ! ” said Mr Fogg quietly . There was a small cannon on the front of the Tankadere . Bunsby fired it again and again . He put the flag halfway down the mast too . That was a signal for help . On the big steamer , somebody saw it . Slowly the steamer turned towards the little boat . X . The Long Noses On board the Carnatic , Passepartout woke up the next morning with a terrible headache . Slowly he remembered everything : the tavern , Fix , the opium . He searched the whole ship , but his master was not on board . And his master did not even know about the early start ! “ It’s all my fault , ” he cried . “ Fix did this . And I let him do it ! ” On the thirteenth of November , the Carnatic arrived in Yokohama . Passepartout walked off the ship with no money in his pockets . He was hungry and alone in Japan . He sold his good European clothes and bought some old Japanese clothes . With the little money that was left , he bought some food .
