In the middle of the Pacific , something wonderful happened . Passepartout looked at his old watch , and it showed the same time as the ship’s clocks . He was very proud . “ I always said the sun was wrong , not my watch ! ” he laughed . But his watch still showed London time , and here London time was exactly twelve hours different . So it was nine in the morning on his watch and nine in the evening on the ship . XI . Across America On the third of December , the General Grant arrived in San Francisco . Mr Fogg’s train to New York was leaving at six in the evening , so he had several hours in the city . He took Aouda for a walk , and Fix and Passepartout went with them . In one of the main streets , a large crowd was shouting . It was a political meeting before an election . Soon the people began to fight . Mr Fogg and the others were caught in the middle of the crowd . A big man with a red beard pushed Mr Fogg roughly and raised his fist . Fix jumped in front of Mr Fogg and took the blow himself . “ You are rude , sir , ” said Mr Fogg to the big man . “ What is your name ? ” “ Colonel Stamp Proctor . And who are you ? ” “ I am an Englishman , ” said Mr Fogg . “ My name is Phileas Fogg . One day I will come back to America and find you . ” “ Whenever you like , ” said the colonel , and the crowd carried him away . That evening they caught the train . The journey from San Francisco to New York usually took seven days . One day a huge herd of buffaloes crossed the railway in front of the train . There were thousands of them . The train had to stop and wait for three hours . Passepartout was angry , but Mr Fogg waited calmly . Then it began to snow . And one day , at a station , Aouda saw a big man with a red beard get on the train . It was Colonel Proctor ! She was afraid for Mr Fogg . She told Fix and Passepartout , and they made a plan . They asked Mr Fogg to play whist with them all day , so that he stayed in his seat . Mr Fogg was very happy to do so . Near a place called Medicine Bow , the train stopped again . A railway man came along the line . “ You can’t go on , ” he said . “ The bridge over the river is broken . It can’t carry the weight of the train . ” The passengers argued . Then the engine driver had an idea . “ We can cross it , ” he said . “ We will go back a little and then drive over the bridge at full speed . We’ll go so fast that the bridge won’t have time to fall . ” “ Why don’t we walk over the bridge first , ” said Passepartout , “ and let the train come after us ? ” It was a sensible idea , but nobody listened to him . The train went back a short way . Then the engine roared , and the train rushed forward faster and faster . It flew across the bridge in a second . As soon as it reached the other side , the bridge fell into the river behind it with a terrible crash .
