XII . The Attack on the Train The next morning , Mr Fogg was playing cards again when a man stopped by their table . It was Colonel Proctor . He watched the game for a moment . Mr Fogg put down a card . “ Play diamonds , not spades , ” the colonel said rudely . “ You know nothing about whist . ” Mr Fogg stood up . “ Sir , I remember you . We have some business to finish . ” They agreed to fight a duel with pistols . But at that moment , loud shouts and shots came from outside . A large group of Sioux warriors was riding beside the train on horses . Some of them jumped onto the train . They were attacking it ! The passengers took their guns and defended themselves . Mr Fogg and Colonel Proctor forgot their quarrel and fought side by side . Some of the attackers climbed onto the engine and hit the driver . Now nobody was driving the train , and it was running faster and faster across the snowy plain . “ We must stop the train ! ” cried the conductor . “ In a few minutes we’ll pass Fort Kearney . There are soldiers there . If we pass the fort , we are lost ! ” “ I will stop it , ” said Mr Fogg . “ No , sir . I’ll go , ” said Passepartout . Before anyone could stop him , Passepartout opened a door and slipped under the carriage . He was once an acrobat in a circus . He climbed along underneath the train from one carriage to the next , holding onto the chains . At last he reached the front . Hanging on with one hand , he unhooked the engine from the train . The engine raced away alone into the snow , and the carriages rolled on and slowly stopped near the station at Fort Kearney . The soldiers from the fort came running . The attackers turned their horses and rode away quickly . Several passengers were hurt . Colonel Proctor had a bad wound , and Fix had a small wound in his arm . Mr Fogg was not hurt at all . But three passengers were missing , and one of them was Passepartout . The attackers had taken them away as prisoners . Aouda looked at Mr Fogg with tears in her eyes . “ I will find him , dead or alive , ” said Mr Fogg . He knew that he could lose a whole day , and perhaps the bet . But he did not stop to think about it . He went to the captain of the fort . The captain asked for volunteers , and thirty soldiers stepped forward . Mr Fogg promised them a reward . Then he turned to Fix . “ Please stay with Aouda , ” he said . And he rode out into the snow with the soldiers . A little later the engine came back and the train continued on its way to the east . Aouda and Fix stayed at the little station . Night came , and the snow fell . Aouda did not sleep . She stood outside and looked into the darkness .
