Early the next morning , they heard shots in the distance . Then Mr Fogg and the soldiers came back through the snow , and Passepartout and the two other passengers were with them . The soldiers had found them ten miles away and freed them after a short fight . Passepartout was full of joy , but also full of sorrow . “ It’s my fault again ! ” he said . “ Because of me , you have lost twenty hours . ” Mr Fogg’s position was now very difficult . The next train was not coming until the evening . The ship to Liverpool was leaving New York on the evening of the eleventh . It was Fix who found the answer . He knew a man called Mudge who had a sledge with sails . On the frozen snow the wind could carry it very fast . Mr Fogg hired the sledge at once , and they flew across the white plain . The wind was strong and cold , and it was two hundred miles to Omaha . But they reached it in a few hours and caught a train to Chicago . From there another train took them to New York . They arrived at the harbour in New York on the eleventh of December at a quarter past eleven at night . The ship for Liverpool , the China , was already gone . It had left forty - five minutes before . XIII . The Henrietta Passepartout felt that it was all his fault . But Mr Fogg only said , “ We will decide what to do tomorrow . ” Early the next morning , Mr Fogg went to the harbour alone . He looked at every ship . At last he found a small steamer called the Henrietta . It was ready to leave . He went on board and asked for the captain . “ I am Andrew Speedy , ” said a rough man with a red face . “ Where are you going , captain ? ” “ To Bordeaux , in France . At noon . ” “ Can you take me and three other people to Liverpool ? ” “ To Liverpool ? No . I’m going to Bordeaux , and I’ll go to Bordeaux . ” “ Then take us to Bordeaux , ” said Mr Fogg . “ I will pay two thousand dollars for each of us . ” Captain Speedy thought about it for a moment . Eight thousand dollars was a lot of money . “ All right , ” he said . At noon the Henrietta sailed . The next day a strange thing happened . Captain Speedy was locked in his cabin , and he was shouting angrily . Mr Fogg was standing on the bridge and giving orders . The ship was going to Liverpool . How did this happen ? It was very simple . Mr Fogg paid the sailors well , and they agreed to follow his orders . Mr Fogg seemed to know a lot about ships , and he steered well . Passepartout thought it was wonderful . Fix did not understand anything . “ He has stolen a ship now ! ” he thought . For several days the weather was bad and the ship went slowly . Then the engineer came to Mr Fogg with bad news . “ We haven’t got enough coal to reach Liverpool , ” he said . Mr Fogg thought for a moment . Then he said to Passepartout , “ Bring the captain here . ” Captain Speedy came on deck like an angry bull . “ Pirate ! ” he shouted . “ Thief ! ”
