“ Captain , ” said Mr Fogg calmly , “ I want to buy your ship . ” “ Never ! ” “ I need to burn it . We haven’t got any more coal . ” “ Burn my ship ! ” cried the captain . “ My ship is worth fifty thousand dollars ! ” “ Here are sixty thousand , ” said Mr Fogg . He gave the captain a thick packet of banknotes . Captain Speedy’s face changed at once . The Henrietta was twenty years old . He counted the money and put it in his pocket . “ The iron parts of the ship and the engine are still yours , ” said Mr Fogg . “ I only need the wood . ” The sailors began to cut up everything made of wood : the cabins , the beds , the furniture and the decks . They put it all into the fire . The ship went on , and each day it grew smaller and emptier . At last they reached Queenstown , in Ireland . The Henrietta had almost nothing left to burn . There was a fast mail train from Queenstown to Dublin , and from Dublin a fast boat went to Liverpool . Mr Fogg shook the captain’s hand and left the ship . Captain Speedy was sad to see him go . He liked this strange man now . At twenty minutes to twelve in the morning , Mr Fogg stepped onto the quay in Liverpool . It was only six hours by train to London . He had nine hours before the time of the bet . He was going to win ! At that moment , Fix put his hand on Mr Fogg’s shoulder . “ Are you really Phileas Fogg ? ” he asked . “ I am . ” “ I arrest you in the name of the Queen ! ” XIV . The Lost Day The police locked Mr Fogg in a room at the Custom House in Liverpool . Passepartout wanted to attack Fix , but some policemen held him back . Aouda did not understand what was happening . Passepartout told her about the bank robbery and Fix’s mistake . She began to cry . Passepartout was full of despair . “ It’s my fault , ” he thought . “ I knew about Fix , and I said nothing to my master . He never had the chance to prove that he was honest . ” Inside the room , Mr Fogg sat on a wooden bench . He was calm , and he did not look angry . He put his watch on the table and watched its hands move . He took out his notebook and wrote , “ 80th day , 11 . 40 a . m . ” Then he waited . At thirty - three minutes past two , there was a noise outside . The door flew open , and Passepartout , Aouda and Fix ran in . Fix was out of breath , and his hair was wild . “ Sir , ” he said , “ forgive me . It was a terrible mistake . You look like the thief . But the real thief was caught three days ago . You are free ! ” Mr Fogg walked up to Fix and looked straight into his face . Then , for the only time in his life , he moved quickly . He hit Fix , and the detective fell to the floor . “ Well done ! ” cried Passepartout . Fix said nothing . He knew that he deserved it .
