Passepartout was very pleased . He looked round the house . It was clean , neat and quiet . There were clocks in every room , and they all showed the same time . On the wall of his own room he found a list of his duties for every hour of the day . Tea and toast were at twenty - three minutes past eight . The shaving water was at thirty - seven minutes past nine . Everything had its minute . “ This is perfect , ” Passepartout said to himself with a smile . “ Mr Fogg is a real machine . I don’t mind working for a machine . We will understand each other very well . ” II . The Bet That day , everybody at the Reform Club was talking about a robbery . On the twenty - ninth of September , a man walked into the Bank of England and took fifty - five thousand pounds in banknotes from a desk . The bank clerk was busy with something else for a moment , and he saw nothing . People remembered a well - dressed man near the desk . The police sent their best men to all the big ports of the world , from Liverpool to New York . The bank offered a large reward to the man who found the thief . In the evening , Mr Fogg sat down at the card table with his usual partners . There were five of them . Andrew Stuart was an engineer . John Sullivan and Samuel Fallentin were bankers . Thomas Flanagan made beer , and Gauthier Ralph was one of the directors of the Bank of England . “ The bank will never see its money again , ” said Stuart . “ You are wrong , ” said Ralph . “ We will catch the thief . Where can he go ? No country is safe for him now . ” “ Oh , the world is big enough , ” said Stuart . “ It was once , ” said Mr Fogg quietly , and he gave the cards to Flanagan . “ What do you mean , once ? ” asked Stuart . “ Has the world become smaller ? ” “ Mr Fogg is right , ” said Ralph . “ Today a man can travel round the world ten times faster than a hundred years ago . So the thief will find it harder to hide . ” “ Yes , of course , ” laughed Stuart . “ Now you can go round the world in three months , I suppose . ” “ In eighty days , ” said Mr Fogg . “ That’s true , ” said Sullivan . He picked up a newspaper , the Daily Telegraph . “ Look , it’s all here . A new railway is open now in India . From London to Suez , by train and ship , it takes seven days . From Suez to Bombay by ship , thirteen days . From Bombay to Calcutta by train , three days . Then thirteen days by ship to Hong Kong and six days to Yokohama , in Japan . It’s twenty - two days across the Pacific to San Francisco , seven days by train to New York , and nine days to London . That makes eighty days . ” “ Yes , eighty days on paper , ” said Stuart . “ But what about storms , shipwrecks and accidents on the railway ? ” “ All included , ” said Mr Fogg , and he played a card . Stuart laughed again . “ On paper you are right , Mr Fogg . But in real life , it’s a different story . ”
