IV . Shoes in Bombay The Mongolia sailed down the Red Sea and across the Indian Ocean . The weather was good , and the ship was fast . Mr Fogg did not look at the sea or the new countries . He ate four meals a day , and he played whist with some other passengers from morning till night . One of them was Sir Francis Cromarty , an English general who was going back to his soldiers in India . Passepartout spent his time on deck , and he often met Fix there . The detective was always friendly , and he often bought him a glass of beer . Passepartout liked him very much . On the twentieth of October , the ship arrived in Bombay . It was two days early . Mr Fogg wrote “ two days gained ” in his notebook . The train for Calcutta was leaving at eight o’clock in the evening , so he had several hours in the city . He gave Passepartout a list of things to buy , and he told him to be at the station by eight . Then he went to the station restaurant and had dinner . Fix went straight to the police office . “ Has a warrant come from London for a man called Fogg ? ” he asked . But nothing had come . Fix was very angry . Without a warrant he could do nothing . Passepartout bought the shirts and shoes , and then he walked through the streets . The city was full of colour and music , because it was a religious holiday . He came to a beautiful temple on Malabar Hill and went inside to look at it . But he did not know the rule of the temple . All visitors had to take off their shoes before they went in . Suddenly three angry priests ran at him . They threw him to the floor and pulled off his shoes . Passepartout was strong and quick . He jumped up , pushed two of the priests away and ran out into the street . He did not stop until he reached the station . At five minutes to eight he arrived on the platform . He had no hat , no shoes and no shopping . He told his master the whole story . “ I hope this will not happen again , ” said Mr Fogg coldly , and he got into the train . Fix was standing behind a pillar on the platform , and he heard the whole story . “ A crime in India ! ” he thought happily . “ Now I can stop them here . ” He did not get on the train . He stayed in Bombay and hurried back into the city . In the train , Mr Fogg found Sir Francis Cromarty again . The general was going to Benares . “ You were lucky tonight , young man , ” Sir Francis said to Passepartout . “ The people here don’t joke about their temples . The priests could send you to prison for that . ” The train travelled all night and all the next day . Passepartout had no shoes , but he did not mind . Now he believed in the journey , and he wanted his master to win .
