The old rajah sat up . Then he stood up on the burning pile , with the young woman in his arms . Through the smoke he looked like a ghost . The priests and the guards cried out in fear and threw themselves on the ground . The rajah walked down slowly through the crowd , came straight to Mr Fogg and Sir Francis and said , “ Let’s go ! ” It was Passepartout ! In the darkness before sunrise , he had crept up to the pile of wood . There he put on the rajah’s long robe and lay down in his place . Then , at the right moment , he stood up and carried Aouda away . A minute later all four men and Aouda were on the elephant , and Kiouni was running through the forest . Behind them the priests and the soldiers understood the trick . They shouted , and the soldiers fired their guns . One bullet went through Mr Fogg’s hat , but nobody was hurt . Soon the travellers were far away . VII . The Judge in Calcutta For an hour Passepartout laughed and laughed . Sir Francis shook his hand warmly . Mr Fogg said , “ Well done ! ” From him , this was very high praise . “ All the credit belongs to you , sir , ” said Passepartout . “ I only had a funny idea . And for a few minutes I was a rajah with a beautiful wife ! ” Aouda was still asleep in a warm blanket . Sir Francis was worried about her . “ If she stays in India , they will find her again , ” he said . “ Then she will not stay in India , ” said Mr Fogg . “ We will take her with us . ” At ten o’clock in the morning they reached Allahabad . Mr Fogg paid the guide and said , “ You were brave and loyal . The elephant is yours too . ” The young man’s eyes shone . Kiouni was worth a lot of money . Passepartout gave the elephant his last pieces of sugar . “ Goodbye , Kiouni , ” he said . “ You are a brave animal ! ” On the train , Aouda slowly woke up . At first she was afraid . Then Sir Francis told her everything , and she thanked her rescuers in perfect English . She told them that she had a cousin in Hong Kong , a rich merchant . Mr Fogg offered to take her there , and she accepted with tears in her eyes . At Benares , Sir Francis said goodbye to them all . On the twenty - fifth of October , at seven in the morning , the train arrived in Calcutta . The ship for Hong Kong was leaving at noon . But as soon as they stepped off the train , a policeman came up to them . “ Are you Mr Phileas Fogg ? ” he asked . “ And is this your servant ? Please follow me . ” The policeman took them to a court . At half past eight , a fat judge called Obadiah came in and sat down . Three priests were standing in the room . Passepartout knew their faces at once . They were the priests from the temple in Bombay ! “ This man went into our temple in Bombay with his shoes on , ” said one of the priests . “ Here are the shoes , ” said the clerk . He put them on the table . “ My shoes ! ” cried Passepartout , before he could stop himself .
