Fix had brought the priests to Calcutta on the next train from Bombay . The elephant ride and the rescue took a lot of time , so he arrived first . Now he was sitting quietly at the back of the court . The judge made his decision . “ Passepartout will stay in prison for fifteen days and pay three hundred pounds , ” he said . “ His master must stay in prison for one week and pay one hundred and fifty pounds . ” Passepartout was in despair . One week in Calcutta ! His master was going to lose the bet , and it was all his fault . But Mr Fogg did not even move his eyebrows . “ I offer bail , ” he said . Bail is money that a prisoner pays to the court . The court keeps it , and the prisoner is free until his next day in court . “ You have that right , ” said the judge . “ The bail is one thousand pounds for each of you . ” Mr Fogg took two thousand pounds from the bag and put the money on the table . Then he said to his servant , “ Come ! ” And he left the court . “ Two thousand pounds ! ” cried Passepartout on the street . “ These are very expensive shoes ! ” Mr Fogg , Aouda and Passepartout went straight to the harbour and got on the ship Rangoon . At noon it sailed for Hong Kong . Fix was furious . “ He leaves two thousand pounds behind him , just like that ! ” he thought . “ Only a thief spends money like that . I’ll follow him to the end of the world if I must . ” And he bought a ticket for the Rangoon too . VIII . A Bad Night in Hong Kong The Rangoon sailed across the sea to Singapore and then north to Hong Kong . During the voyage Aouda came to know Mr Fogg better . He was kind to her , but cold and quiet , like a clock . She did not understand him , but she began to admire him . One morning Passepartout met Fix on the deck of the Rangoon . “ Mr Fix ! ” he cried . “ You are here too ? I thought you were staying in Bombay ! ” “ I work for a shipping company , ” Fix answered . “ My company sent me to Hong Kong . ” Passepartout said nothing , but he began to think . Fix in Suez , Fix in Bombay , and now Fix on this ship ! Suddenly Passepartout thought he understood . “ He’s a spy ! ” he said to himself . “ The gentlemen of the Reform Club sent him . They want to be sure that my master goes round the world honestly . ” He laughed at the idea , but he decided to say nothing to his master . Near the coast of China , a great storm began . For two days the ship fought against the wind and the waves . It arrived in Hong Kong on the sixth of November , one day late . The ship for Yokohama , the Carnatic , was supposed to leave the day before . But luck was on Mr Fogg’s side . The Carnatic needed some repairs , and it was going to leave the next morning at five o’clock . In Hong Kong there was bad news for Aouda . Her cousin was not there any more . He had moved to Holland , in Europe .
