Aouda did not know what to do . “ What shall I do now , Mr Fogg ? ” she asked . “ It is very simple , ” he said . “ Come to Europe with us . ” She thanked him and agreed . Mr Fogg sent Passepartout to the harbour to book three cabins on the Carnatic . At the harbour , Passepartout learned something important . The repairs were finished early . The Carnatic was going to leave that same evening , not the next morning ! He had to tell his master at once . But Fix was waiting for him on the quay . The detective was in a very bad mood . The warrant was still not there , and now Mr Fogg was leaving British land for Japan . After that , a warrant from London could not help him . He had to stop Mr Fogg in Hong Kong . “ Come and have a drink with me , ” Fix said . He took Passepartout into a small , dark tavern near the harbour . They sat down , and Fix ordered wine . “ Listen , ” said Fix . “ I’m going to tell you the truth . I’m not working for a shipping company . I’m a police detective . Your master is the man who robbed the Bank of England . ” Passepartout laughed . “ My master ? A thief ? You’re mad ! ” “ I need to keep him here in Hong Kong for a few days , ” said Fix . “ Help me , and I’ll share the reward with you . That’s a lot of money . ” “ Never ! ” cried Passepartout . “ My master is the most honest man in the world . I will never help you ! ” But Fix had another plan . There were men in the tavern who were smoking opium , a drug that makes people fall into a deep sleep . Fix gave Passepartout more wine . Then he put a pipe of opium in his hand . Passepartout was tired and confused , and he smoked it . A few minutes later his head fell on the table , and he was fast asleep . Fix paid for the drinks and left . “ Now Mr Fogg will not know about the Carnatic , ” he thought . “ He will miss the ship . ” Hours later , in the middle of the night , Passepartout slowly opened his eyes . He remembered only one thing . “ The Carnatic ! ” he said . “ The Carnatic ! ” He got up and went out , falling against the walls . Somehow he found his way to the harbour . He walked up onto the ship just before it left , and then he fell asleep again on the deck . IX . The Tankadere Early the next morning , Mr Fogg and Aouda came to the harbour with their bags . The Carnatic was gone , and Passepartout was gone too . Mr Fogg did not look worried . “ This is only a small problem , madam , ” he said to Aouda . “ We will find another ship . ” A small man walked up to them . It was Fix . “ Were you going to take the Carnatic too , sir ? ” he asked . “ It left last night . And there isn’t another ship to Yokohama for a week . ” Fix was very happy . Mr Fogg had to stay in Hong Kong now , and the warrant would soon arrive .
