I had no plough and no spade , so I made a spade from very hard wood . I had no machine to break the grain into flour . So I made a deep bowl from a big block of wood . I beat the grain in it with a heavy stick . I had no oven , so I baked my bread under large clay pots in hot ashes . All this took me months . Then at last I had my own bread . It was the best bread in the world . On my trips round the island I caught a young parrot . I knocked it down with a stick and took it home . I called him Poll , and I spent years teaching him to speak . At last he learned to say my name very well . He was the first creature that ever spoke to me on the island . By now my clothes were old and full of holes . I made new ones from the skins of the goats that I shot . I made a tall hat , a jacket and short trousers that came down to my knees . The hair was on the outside , so the rain ran off . I also made an umbrella from skins , because the sun was very hot . It took me a long time , but it was one of my most useful things . If anyone in England saw me in these clothes , they would either be afraid or laugh out loud . At dinner I sat at my table like a king with his family around him . Poll sat on my shoulder and was the only one allowed to speak . My old dog sat on my right hand . The two cats sat one on each side of the table . Sometimes they waited for a piece of meat from my hand . X . The Canoe and the Current In all these years I often thought about the land in the west . I could see it far away on clear days . Perhaps I could reach it in a boat . The ship’s small boat lay on the beach , turned over by the storm . I tried for weeks to turn it the right way up , but I was not strong enough . So I decided to make a canoe from a single tree . I found a very large cedar tree . It took me twenty days to cut it down and months more to shape it with my tools . When it was finished , it was a very fine boat . It was big enough to carry twenty - six men . But it was about a hundred yards from the water , and I could not move it even one inch . I tried to dig a canal to the sea , but it was too much work for one man . At last I had to leave it where it was . I learned a hard lesson . A wise man thinks about the cost of a job before he begins it .
