In my sixth year I made a smaller canoe close to the water . I made a mast and a sail for it . I also fixed my umbrella at the back , to keep off the sun . Then I decided to sail round my island . On the east side of the island a long line of rocks went out into the sea . When I sailed round the end of it , a strong current caught my boat . It was like a river running in the sea . It carried me away from the island very fast . I pulled at my paddle with all my strength , but it was no use . I was sure that I was going to die out there , alone on the open sea . I looked back at my island , and now it seemed a lovely place . “ Oh happy island ! ” I cried . “ I shall never see you again ! ” I understood now how foolish I was to be unhappy there . Then the wind began to blow from the south - east . I put up my sail . Slowly the boat came out of the current , and at last I reached the shore of my island again . I fell on my knees and thanked God . I was too tired to go home . So I walked to my country house and fell asleep under a tree . Suddenly a voice woke me . “ Robin , Robin , Robin Crusoe ! Poor Robin Crusoe ! Where are you , Robin Crusoe ? Where have you been ? ” At first I was terribly frightened . Who could know my name here ? Then I saw my Poll sitting on the fence . These were the words that I often said to him when I was sad . He flew onto my thumb and went on talking to me as if he was glad to see me again . After this I stayed on my own side of the island for a long time . I did not want to meet that current again . In my eleventh year my gunpowder began to run low . I started to think about catching goats alive . I dug pits and covered them with branches , and I caught some young goats in them . At first they were very wild . I kept them hungry for a few days , and then they began to eat from my hand . I built fences round large fields and kept my goats inside . After some years I had a flock of more than forty goats . I had meat , milk , butter and cheese , and I did not need to use my gun . XI . A Footprint in the Sand I lived like this for many years , and I was almost content . Then one day , around noon , I was walking along the beach to my canoe . Suddenly I stopped as if lightning had struck me . There , in the sand , was the print of a man’s bare foot . I could see the toes , the heel and every part of it clearly . I stood still and listened . I looked all around me . I heard nothing and saw nothing . There was only this one footprint , and no others near it .
