The next day I took Friday to the place of the feast . The visitors were gone , but we saw the terrible remains . Friday showed me by signs that he still wanted to share in the feast , as his people did . I made it very clear that I hated this . I told him that I would kill him if he ever did it . He never tried again . I made him a jacket , a cap and trousers . At first they were uncomfortable for him , but soon he liked them . I also showed him how my gun worked . The first time I shot a bird , Friday shook with fear . He thought that there was a spirit in the gun that could kill anything . When I was not there , he spoke to it . He asked it not to kill him . Friday learned English very quickly . He was the most faithful and loving friend that any man ever had . In return I grew to love him too . My life was now far happier than before . I often said that I would stay on the island forever if Friday stayed with me . XIII . Friday’s Father and the Spaniard I taught Friday about God and read the Bible with him . He told me that his people prayed to a great old god called Benamuckee . Only the old men could go up the mountains and speak to him . Friday asked me a lot of hard questions . “ If God is much stronger than the devil , ” he asked one day , “ why doesn’t God kill the devil , so that he can’t do any more harm ? ” I did not know how to answer him at first . I pretended not to hear him . He was a clever young man , and his questions made me think harder about my own faith . One clear day we climbed the highest hill , and Friday looked across the sea . Suddenly he began to jump and dance . “ Oh joy ! ” he cried . “ Oh glad ! There , see my country , there my people ! ” He told me that there were seventeen white men living with his people . They had come in a boat after a shipwreck . I was sure that they were Spanish or Portuguese sailors . I began to think that we could go there together in a boat . “ Will you go back to your people , Friday ? ” I asked . “ Yes , ” he said . “ I would be very glad to be with my people again . ” “ And what will you do there ? Will you live as you lived before ? ” “ No , no , ” he said . “ Friday will tell them to be good , to pray to God , to eat bread and goat’s milk , and not to eat men . ” “ But then they will kill you , ” I said . “ No , they won’t kill me , ” said Friday . “ They are ready to learn . The bearded men taught them many things . ” We began to build a large boat together . Friday was much better than me at choosing the right tree . We worked on the boat for months .
