It was in my twenty - seventh year on the island . One morning Friday ran in , very frightened . “ Master , master ! ” he cried . “ Oh , bad ! Three canoes , one , two , three ! ” We watched them from the hill . There were twenty - one men and three prisoners . One of the prisoners was a white man with a beard , tied up on the sand . Friday and I took all our guns . We went quietly through the woods . We came very close and fired together . The noise and the fire filled the visitors with terror . Many fell , and the others ran in all directions . Some of them ran to their canoes and escaped to sea . I cut the ropes from the white man . He was a Spaniard , and he was very weak . I gave him rum and bread , and a sword to defend himself . Then Friday looked into one of the canoes . There was another prisoner inside , an old man , tied hand and foot . Friday cut his ropes and looked at his face . Suddenly he began to kiss the old man and hold him . He cried , laughed , jumped and sang , all at once . It was his father ! I have never seen a son who loved his father more . He ran to fetch water and bread for him . He sat by him and rubbed his arms and legs , which were stiff from the ropes . My island now had more people in it . I felt like a king . Friday was a Christian , his father still prayed to his old gods , and the Spaniard was a Catholic . But I let every man pray in his own way . The Spaniard told me that sixteen more of his men were living on the mainland . They had very little to eat and no hope of getting home . We decided that the Spaniard and Friday’s father should go and bring them to the island . Then we could build a ship together and all sail away . First we planted a lot more barley and rice , so there would be enough food for everybody . Then I gave the two men a canoe , guns and food . They sailed away to the west , and we waited for them . XIV . The English Ship They were gone for eight days . Then one morning Friday ran to me again . “ Master , master , they are coming ! ” But it was not the Spaniard . It was an English ship , and it was anchored near the island . A boat was coming to the beach with eleven men in it . I watched them through my telescope . Three of the men were prisoners . The others pushed them onto the sand and laughed at them . Then they walked into the woods , and the prisoners sat down , full of despair . In the afternoon the sailors fell asleep in the shade . I went quietly to the three prisoners . They saw my goatskin clothes , my tall hat , my guns and my umbrella , and they were very frightened . “ Do not be afraid , gentlemen , ” I said in English . “ Perhaps you have a friend near you when you least expect it . Tell me what happened . ”
