A few days later we were near the port of Yarmouth , and a real storm came . It was much worse than the first one . Even the old sailors were afraid . The captain went past my cabin . I heard him say quietly , “ Lord , be kind to us , or we are all lost ! ” The ship began to take in water , and I had to work at the pump with the others . At one point I fainted from fear . Another ship sent its boat to help us , and we climbed into it . Soon after that we watched our ship go down under the waves . We reached the land and walked to Yarmouth . The people there were very kind to us . They gave us money to go on to London or back to Hull . My friend’s father was the captain of the ship that sank . He spoke to me very seriously in Yarmouth . “ Young man , ” he said , “ you must never go to sea again . This storm was a clear sign from heaven . Go home to your father . ” But I was too proud to go home . I was afraid that people would laugh at me . So I went to London by land , and I looked for another ship . II . A Slave in Sallee In London I met the captain of a ship that sailed to Guinea , on the west coast of Africa . He was an honest man , and he liked me . He took me with him , and I did not have to pay for my journey . I took some cheap goods with me and sold them in Africa for gold dust . When we came back to London , I had nearly three hundred pounds . The captain also taught me how to use a compass and how to find our position at sea . On this voyage I became a real sailor . Sadly , my good friend the captain died soon after we came home . I decided to go on the same voyage again with his ship . This time I was not so lucky . One morning , near the Canary Islands , a pirate ship began to chase us . It came from Sallee , a port on the coast of Morocco . We had twelve guns , and the pirates had eighteen . We fought hard , but they jumped onto our ship with swords . At last we had to give up . They took us all to Sallee as prisoners . The captain of the pirates kept me as his own slave . I had to work in his garden and clean his house . When he went to sea , he left me at home . My heart was full of pain . “ My father was right , ” I thought . “ Now I am lost , and nobody can help me . ” For two long years I dreamed about escape , but I never had a chance . My master often went fishing in a small boat . He always took me with him and a boy called Xury . I was good at catching fish . So he began to send us out alone with one of his men . This man was called Ismael , but everybody called him Moely .
