One day my master prepared a bigger boat for a trip with some friends . He put food , water and guns in it . But in the end his friends did not come . “ Go and catch some fish for my dinner , ” he told me . “ My friends are coming tonight . ” This was the chance I was waiting for . I put more food and water into the boat . I also asked Moely to bring some gunpowder for the guns . We sailed out of the port . When we were far from the land , I stood behind Moely and suddenly pushed him into the sea . He came up at once , because he swam like a fish . “ Take me in ! ” he shouted . “ I will go with you anywhere ! ” I picked up a gun and pointed it at him . “ I don’t want to hurt you , ” I said . “ The sea is calm , and you swim well . Go back to the land , and I won’t shoot . But if you come near the boat , I will shoot you . ” He turned round and swam towards the shore . I am sure that he reached it safely . Then I turned to Xury . “ Xury , ” I said , “ if you are true to me , I will make you a great man . If you are not , I will throw you into the sea too . ” The boy smiled at me . He promised to be faithful and to go all over the world with me . III . Xury and the Coast of Africa I did not sail north , where my master’s people could catch us . I sailed south along the coast of Africa . We sailed for five days before we dared to come near the land . It was a wild coast . At night we heard terrible noises from the forest . There were lions and other large animals , and we were afraid to go on shore in the dark . We needed fresh water , so one day Xury went on land with a jar . “ If bad men come , ” he said , “ they will catch me , and you can get away . ” I loved the boy for these words . We went together , and nobody hurt us . We found good water and a kind of hare . A few days later we saw a huge lion asleep on the beach . I shot it twice , and Xury finished it with a pistol . It took us a whole day to take off its skin . Later I slept on it . Further south we saw people on the shore . They were not afraid of us , and they looked friendly . We made signs that we needed food . They brought us dried meat and grain and put them on the beach for us . While we were there , two large wild animals ran down from the hills into the sea . The people screamed and ran away . I shot one of the animals , a leopard , and it soon died . The people were amazed by the noise and the fire of my gun . They were very grateful . They gave us more food and water , and I kept the leopard’s beautiful spotted skin .
