We put the small boat into the water , and all eleven of us climbed into it . We rowed towards the land , but we knew that the boat could not live in such a sea . Suddenly a wave as high as a mountain came from behind us . It turned the boat over , and we all fell into the sea . The water pulled me down again and again . Each time a wave carried me nearer to the land . Then it pulled me back . At last it threw me hard against a rock . I held on to the rock with all my strength until the water went back . Then I ran up the beach and fell down on the grass , far from the waves . I was safe . I looked up to heaven and thanked God for my life . Then I looked around for my friends . I never saw any of them again . I only found three of their hats , one cap and two shoes that were not a pair . V . Alone on the Island Now I began to think about my situation , and I was very afraid . I was wet and I had no dry clothes . I had nothing to eat or drink , and no gun . I only had a knife , a pipe and a little tobacco in a box . It was getting dark , and I was afraid of wild animals . I found some fresh water to drink . Then I put a little tobacco in my mouth to stop my hunger . After that I climbed into a thick tree and slept there all night . When I woke up , it was a bright , calm day . The storm was over . To my surprise , the high tide had lifted the ship off the sandbank . It was now standing up straight in the water , not far from the shore . I felt very sad . “ If we had stayed on the ship , ” I thought , “ my friends would all be alive now . ” At low tide the ship was only about a quarter of a mile away . I took off my clothes and swam to it . I found a rope hanging down the side , and I climbed up . Everything in the back of the ship was dry . I was very hungry . So first I filled my pockets with ship’s bread and ate it while I worked . But I needed a boat to carry things to the shore . So I tied some pieces of wood together with rope and made a raft . On the raft I put three sea chests . I filled them with bread , rice , three Dutch cheeses , some dried goat meat and a little grain . I also found some bottles of rum . Then I found the carpenter’s chest full of tools . That was more valuable to me than a ship full of gold . I took two good guns , two pistols , some swords and some gunpowder too .
