I took the raft slowly to the shore with the tide . I found a little river , and there I carried everything onto the land . Then I climbed a hill to look around . Now I saw the terrible truth . I was on an island . There was no other land near it except some rocks and two small islands far to the west . I saw a lot of birds , but no people and no houses . Over the next thirteen days I made eleven trips to the ship . I brought back nails , a big saw and an axe . I brought sails , ropes , clothes , three more barrels of powder , lead for bullets and much more . I took pens , ink and paper , some books and three Bibles . There was a dog on the ship , and two cats . I carried the cats on my raft , and the dog swam after me . The dog was my faithful friend for many years . On my last trip I found some money in a drawer . There were gold and silver coins worth about thirty - six pounds . In the same drawer there were some knives and a pair of scissors . I smiled at the money . “ Oh , money ! ” I said aloud . “ What are you good for ? You are not worth picking up from the ground . One of these knives is worth more than all of you . ” But then I changed my mind , and I took the money with me after all . That night a strong wind began to blow . In the morning I looked out to sea , and the ship was gone . VI . My Castle and My Calendar Now I had to find a safe place to live . I wanted fresh water and shade from the hot sun . I also wanted a view of the sea , so I could see any passing ship . And I wanted to be safe from wild animals and dangerous men . I found a small , flat , green place on the side of a hill . Behind it the rock went up like the wall of a house . In the rock there was a hollow like the door of a cave . In front of the hollow I built a strong fence in a half circle . I cut thick sticks and drove them deep into the ground , very close together . It took me a long time . There was no gate in the fence . I used a short ladder to climb over it , and then I pulled the ladder in after me . Inside the fence I put up a big tent , and I carried all my things into it . Then I began to dig into the rock behind the tent . I made the hollow into a real cave , and I kept my food and my tools there . I put the earth and stones from the cave against my fence , and so it became even stronger . I called this home my castle .
