Soon I realised that I was going to lose track of time . There was nobody to tell me the date . So I found a big post and set it up on the beach where I first came on shore . I cut these words into it with my knife : “ I came on shore here on the 30th of September 1659 . ” Every day I cut a small mark on the side of the post . Every seventh mark was longer than the others , for Sunday . Every first day of the month had a mark that was longer still . This was my calendar . I had ink and paper , so I began to write a journal , a book about each day . Here are some of the first pages : “ 30 September 1659 . I , poor Robinson Crusoe , came on shore on this terrible island . All the other men from the ship were drowned . I call this place the Island of Despair . ” “ 31 October . I went out with my gun and killed a goat . Her young one followed me home . ” “ 1 November . I put up my tent under the rock and slept there for the first night . ” “ 4 November . I made a plan for each day . In the morning I go out with my gun for two or three hours . Then I work until eleven o’clock and eat . From twelve to two I sleep , because it is too hot . In the evening I work again . ” “ 10 December . Part of the roof of my cave fell down today . Luckily , I was not inside . ” Sometimes I was very sad and cried like a child . So one day I made two lists , like a merchant with his accounts . On one side I wrote the bad things , and on the other side the good things . “ I am alone on an island , with no hope of rescue , ” I wrote on the bad side . On the good side I wrote , “ But I am alive . I was not drowned like all my friends . ” “ I have no clothes for cold weather , ” said the bad side . “ But the weather is hot here , and I hardly need clothes , ” said the good side . “ I have nobody to talk to . ” “ But God sent the ship near the shore , and I got many useful things from it . ” After this I felt much better . I saw that even a bad life has some good things in it . VII . The Earthquake and the Barley I had to learn every job from the beginning . I had never made anything with my hands before . Now I made a table and a chair , and I put shelves in my cave . It was hard work . To make one board , I had to cut down a tree and then cut it into shape with my axe . Once it took me forty - two days to make a board for a long shelf . But I had plenty of time . Every day I went out with my gun . There were many wild goats on the island , but they were very shy and quick . They ran away as soon as they saw me . Soon I learned to come at them from above . When I was above them on the hills , they did not see me so easily .
