Then I drank the rum and went to bed . It was very strong , and I slept for a very long time . I think that I slept for a whole day and a night . Later I found that I had lost a day in my calendar . When I woke up , I felt much better . From that day I read the Bible every morning and every evening . Slowly my heart changed . Before , I always asked God to save me from the island . Now I asked Him to save me from my old , bad life . I began to feel at peace . I was still alone , but I was not so unhappy . In July I was strong again , and I decided to explore my island . I followed the little river inland . There I found green fields , wild tobacco and sugar cane . Further on I came to a beautiful valley . There were melons on the ground and lime trees , and wild grapes grew all over the trees . I dried the grapes in the sun , and they became raisins . The raisins were among my best food for many years . I loved this valley so much that I built a second home there . It had a strong fence too . I called it my country house . Now I had a house by the sea and a house in the country , like a rich gentleman in England . On the 30th of September I had lived on the island for one year . I spent that day without food . I thanked God for all His mercies to me . IX . Bread , Pots and a Parrot Slowly I learned about the weather of my island . It had no winter and summer . It had two rainy seasons and two dry seasons . My first crop was a failure , because I planted the seeds just before a dry season . They did not grow at all . After that I always planted them just before the rain . My barley and rice began to grow . Then the goats and wild hares came and ate the young green leaves . So I built a fence round my field . Later , when the grain was nearly ready , the birds came in hundreds . I shot three of them and hung them up on sticks , like thieves in England . After that the other birds stayed away . While my grain was growing , I learned to make baskets from thin branches . As a boy in York I often watched the basket maker at his work . Now I was glad of it . I made pots from clay too . At first they were ugly and weak , and many of them broke in the sun . Then one day I found a piece of a broken pot in my fire . The fire had made it as hard as stone . After that I burned all my pots in a big fire , and they were strong enough to hold water . Now I could cook soup .
