X . My Little Nurse The farmer had a daughter who was nine years old . She was small for her age , only about forty feet tall . She made her doll’s cradle into a bed for me . It stood on a high shelf , safe from the rats . She also became my teacher . When I pointed at something , she told me its name . In a few days I could ask for anything I wanted . She called me Grildrig , which means “ little man ” . Later the whole kingdom called me by this name . I called her Glumdalclitch , which means “ little nurse ” . I owe her my life . We were never apart while I was in that country . Soon all the neighbours were talking about the farmer’s strange little creature . One day an old farmer came to see me . When he put on his glasses , his eyes looked like two full moons , and I laughed . He was angry about that . He was also a greedy man . He told my master that he could make a lot of money by showing me at the market . The next morning Glumdalclitch told me about the plan , and she cried . “ My parents promised that Grildrig would be mine , ” she said . “ But they will do the same as last year . They gave me a lamb , and when it was fat , they sold it to the butcher . ” She was afraid that rough people would hurt me . I was less worried than she was . I always hoped that I would be free one day . On market day the farmer carried me to the town in a box . Glumdalclitch rode with him , and she put her doll’s quilt into the box for me . At an inn called the Green Eagle they put me on a table . Thirty people came in at a time to see me . Glumdalclitch told me what to do . I bowed to the people and said , “ You are welcome . ” I drank their health from a thimble and waved my sword like a fencer . That day I did my tricks for twelve groups of people . By the evening I was half dead from tiredness . One schoolboy threw a hazelnut at my head . It was as big as a pumpkin , but luckily it missed . After that the farmer showed me every market day . Then he decided to take me round the whole country . In August we set out for the capital city , which was three thousand miles away . Glumdalclitch carried me in a box on her lap . On the way he showed me in eighteen towns . After ten weeks we reached the capital . The farmer showed me there ten times a day . By now I spoke their language quite well , and Glumdalclitch was teaching me to read . But the hard work was making me ill . I could not eat , and I became as thin as a skeleton . The farmer thought that I would soon die . So he wanted to make as much money from me as he could .
