Another day he picked me up and dropped me into a big silver bowl of cream . I went right under . If I had not been a good swimmer , I could have drowned . Glumdalclitch ran and pulled me out . I was not hurt , but my suit was ruined . The dwarf was punished , and soon the Queen gave him away to a lady . I never saw him again . One morning Glumdalclitch put my box on a window sill , and I sat eating a sweet cake for breakfast . More than twenty wasps flew in . They were as big as birds , and they buzzed louder than bagpipes . I was frightened , but I drew my sword and fought them in the air . I killed four of them , and the rest flew away . Their stings were an inch and a half long . I kept them all . XII . The Monkey and Other Dangers My small size brought me into many silly and dangerous accidents . One day in the palace garden , a storm of hail began . The hailstones knocked me down and hit me all over , like hard tennis balls . I was so bruised that I could not go out for ten days . Another time Glumdalclitch left me alone in the garden . A gardener’s little white dog found me . He picked me up in his mouth and ran to his master , wagging his tail . Luckily it was a well - trained dog , and he did not hurt me at all . But the gardener was terribly frightened . And Glumdalclitch , who could not find me , was almost mad with worry . After that she never let me out of her sight . I never told her about some other adventures . Once a large bird came down at me out of the sky . I drew my sword and ran under some branches , or it would have carried me away . The Queen liked to hear me talk about the sea . So her carpenter built me a little boat . She also ordered a long wooden tank of water for it , three hundred feet long . There I rowed for the Queen and her ladies . Sometimes I put up my sail , and the ladies made a wind with their fans . Once a big frog came in with the water . It climbed into my boat and nearly turned it over . I hit it with my oar for a long time , until at last it jumped out . But the greatest danger of all came from a monkey . One warm day Glumdalclitch locked me in her room and went out . The window was open . I was sitting quietly in my box when something jumped in through the window . It was a monkey from the palace kitchen . He jumped about the room and then came to my box . He looked in at the door and the windows with great curiosity . I went into the farthest corner , but I was too frightened to hide .
