The monkey put his paw in through the door , like a cat playing with a mouse . At last he caught my coat and pulled me out . He held me in one paw , as a nurse holds a baby . When I struggled , he squeezed me hard , so I stopped . I think he believed I was a baby monkey , because he often stroked my face . Suddenly there was a noise at the door . The monkey jumped out of the window with me . He ran along the roofs on three legs , holding me in the fourth . I heard Glumdalclitch scream . Soon the whole palace was in an uproar . Hundreds of people saw the monkey sitting high on a roof . He held me like a baby and pushed food into my mouth . Many people below could not help laughing . It must have looked very funny to everyone except me . Servants brought ladders and climbed up . The monkey dropped me on the roof and escaped . I sat there , five hundred yards above the ground , afraid that the wind would blow me off . At last a young servant climbed up , put me in his pocket and brought me down safely . I was so weak and bruised that I stayed in bed for two weeks . The monkey was killed , and no such animal was allowed in the palace again . When I was better , the King laughed about my adventure . I told him that monkeys in Europe were small , and I could fight a dozen of them at once . “ And this monster was as big as an elephant , ” I said , putting my hand on my sword . “ But if I had not been so frightened , I would have given him a terrible wound . ” The whole court laughed loudly . I understood then how silly it is to act brave in front of people so much greater than you . XIII . Talking with the King I tried to please the King and Queen in different ways . From the Queen’s hair I made two little chairs and a purse . From hairs of the King’s beard I made myself a new comb . I also played music for them . Glumdalclitch had an instrument with keys , called a spinet . But it was sixty feet long , and each key was almost a foot wide . So I took two thick sticks and ran from side to side , hitting the keys . In this way I played a lively English dance . It was the hardest exercise that I ever did . The King often put my box on the table in his room . There we talked for many hours . He asked me to tell him all about the government of England . In five long talks I told him everything . I spoke about our Parliament , our lords and our judges , our money and our wars . The King listened carefully and wrote notes . Then he asked me many questions .
