Some people in the crowd were not kind . They shot arrows at me , and one almost hit my eye . The soldiers caught six of these men , tied them up and gave them to me as a punishment . I put five of them into my coat pocket . I held the sixth one up to my mouth , as if I wanted to eat him alive . The poor man screamed . The officers were afraid , especially when I took out my knife . But I only cut his strings and put him gently on the ground , and he ran away . I did the same with the other five . The people were delighted . The Emperor and his council talked about me every day . Some of them were afraid that I would break free . Others said that I would eat all their food . Some even wanted to kill me . But then the officers told the council about the six men . After that the villages sent me food every morning : six cows , forty sheep , bread and wine . They made me a bed from six hundred of their beds . Three hundred tailors made me a suit , and six teachers taught me their language . After three weeks I could speak a little . The first words that I learned were these : “ Please give me my freedom . ” I said them to the Emperor on my knees every day . He answered that I must be patient . First I had to promise peace . And his officers had to search my pockets , because I might have dangerous weapons . III . What Was in My Pockets I agreed to the search . Two officers came with pens and paper . I put the officers carefully into my pockets , one after the other . But I did not show them one secret pocket . In it I kept my glasses , a small telescope and a few other little things . The officers wrote a list of everything they saw . The little people called me Quinbus Flestrin , which means the Great Man - Mountain . Here is part of their list , in simple words . “ In the right coat pocket of the Great Man - Mountain we found a large piece of rough cloth . It could cover the floor of Your Majesty’s best room . In the left pocket there was a huge silver box . One of us stepped inside and sank up to his knees in a kind of dust . The dust flew into our faces and made us sneeze many times . “ In another pocket we found a machine with twenty long poles on its back . We think the Man - Mountain combs his hair with it . In the pockets of his trousers we saw two hollow iron pillars , each as long as a man . We do not know what they are . “ From another pocket hung a great silver chain with a wonderful machine at the end . It was a ball , half silver and half made of something clear , like ice . It made a noise without stopping , like a water mill . We think it is either an unknown animal or his god . Probably it is his god , because he told us that he seldom does anything without looking at it .
