From the hill I could see fields . The grass was about twenty feet high . I found a path through a field of barley . The barley was forty feet high , and it took me an hour to cross the field . At the end there was a very high hedge with steps to climb over it . But each step was six feet high . Then I saw a man in the next field . He was as tall as a church tower , and every step he took was about ten yards long . I hid in the barley , terribly afraid . The giant called out , and his voice sounded like thunder . Seven more giants came with great knives for cutting the barley . They began to cut the field where I was hiding . I tried to move away , but here the rain had knocked the barley down . I could not get through . The sharp ears of barley went through my clothes into my skin . I lay down and wished that I could die . I thought about my poor wife and children . How foolish I was to go to sea again ! And I thought about Lilliput . There the people saw me as the greatest wonder in the world . Here I was as small as one of those little people would be among us . Wise men are right : nothing is great or little except by comparison . One of the workers came nearer and nearer . I was sure that his next step would crush me , so I screamed as loudly as I could . The giant stopped and looked around . At last he saw me . He looked at me carefully , as a man looks at a small animal that might bite . Then he picked me up between his thumb and finger and held me close to his eyes . I was sixty feet above the ground . I did not struggle . I put my hands together and spoke some sad , polite words . He was surprised to hear me speak . His fingers were squeezing my sides , so I showed him where it hurt . He understood . He put me gently into his pocket and ran with me to his master , the farmer . IX . The Farmer’s Family The farmer lifted my coat with a straw , because he thought it was a kind of skin . He blew my hair aside to see my face better . Then he put me on the ground . I walked slowly back and forth , to show that I did not want to run away . I took off my hat and bowed low to him . Then I poured my gold coins into his hand . He looked at them closely , but he did not know what they were . He made a sign that I should put them back in my pocket . The farmer spoke to me often . His voice hurt my ears like the noise of a water mill . I answered in several languages , but we could not understand each other . At last he put his handkerchief on his hand , and I lay down on it . He wrapped me up and carried me home .
