Then Akela drove the herd in through the gate like a storm , and the crowd ran left and right . Mowgli turned and walked away with Akela , and when he looked up at the stars , he felt happy . “ No more sleeping in traps for me , ” he said . “ But we will not hurt the village , because Messua was kind to me . ” When the moon was going down , Mowgli , Akela and Grey Brother came to Mother Wolf’s cave with the great striped skin . “ They have thrown me out of the Man Pack , Mother , ” said Mowgli . “ But I have come with Shere Khan’s skin to keep my word . ” Mother Wolf’s eyes shone . “ I told him that the hunter would be the hunted , ” she said . “ It is well done . ” “ Little Brother , it is well done , ” said a deep voice from the bushes , and Bagheera ran to Mowgli’s feet . “ We were lonely in the jungle without you . ” They climbed up the Council Rock together . Mowgli spread the skin on the flat stone where Akela used to sit , and Akela lay down on it . “ Look well , O Wolves ! ” he called , just as on the night when Mowgli first came there . Since Akela lost his place , the Pack had lived without a Law , and many wolves were hurt or missing . But they came to the old call and saw Shere Khan’s skin on the stone . Then a song came to Mowgli all by itself , and he danced on the skin and sang until he had no breath left . “ Look well , O Wolves . Have I kept my word ? ” said Mowgli , and the wolves answered , “ Yes . ” “ Lead us again , Akela , ” cried one thin wolf . “ Lead us again , man’s cub . We want to be the Free People again . ” “ No , ” said Bagheera . “ You fought for your freedom , and now it is yours . Eat it , O Wolves . ” “ The Man Pack and the Wolf Pack have both thrown me out , ” said Mowgli . “ Now I will hunt alone in the jungle . ” “ And we will hunt with you , ” said his four wolf brothers . So from that day Mowgli hunted in the jungle with his four brothers . Years later he became a man and married . But that is a story for grown - ups . XII . Story Four : Rikki - Tikki - Tavi This is the story of the great war that Rikki - tikki - tavi fought alone in a big house in Segowlee , in India . Rikki - tikki was a mongoose , a small animal with fur and a tail like a little cat . When he ran through the long grass , his war cry was “ Rikk - tikk - tikki - tikki - tchk ! ” One summer day a flood washed him out of his family’s hole and carried him away . When he woke up , he was lying on a garden path , very wet and dirty , and a small boy was saying , “ Here’s a dead mongoose . Let’s have a funeral . ” “ No , ” said the boy’s mother . “ Let’s take him in and dry him . Perhaps he isn’t really dead . ”
