“ Yes ! Yes ! ” shouted the young wolves , who were always hungry . “ What harm can a naked frog do ? Where is the bull ? ” They looked at Mowgli one by one , and then they ran down the hill to eat . Only Akela , Baloo , Bagheera and Mowgli’s wolf family stayed . In the dark Shere Khan was still roaring . “ Yes , roar , ” said Bagheera quietly . “ One day this little thing will make you roar in a different way . ” So Mowgli came into the Seeonee Wolf Pack , for the price of a bull and because of Baloo’s good word . III . The Red Flower Ten years passed . Mowgli grew up with the cubs , although they became grown wolves while he was still a child . Father Wolf taught him the jungle , and Bagheera taught him to climb . Soon he could move through the trees almost like a monkey . At the Council Rock he found out something strange : when he looked into a wolf’s eyes , the wolf always had to look away . “ All the jungle is yours , ” Bagheera told him . “ But a bull bought your life , so you must never kill or eat cattle . ” And Mowgli obeyed . Akela was getting old now . Shere Khan was often near the Pack , and he made friends with the young wolves . “ How can fine hunters like you follow a dying wolf and a man’s cub ? ” he asked them . One hot day Mowgli lay with his head on Bagheera’s black coat . “ Little Brother , ” said Bagheera , “ Shere Khan is your enemy . When Akela misses his next kill , he will not be leader any more . The young wolves believe that a man’s cub has no place in the Pack . ” “ But I was born in the jungle , ” said Mowgli . “ I have obeyed the Law . The wolves are my brothers ! ” “ Feel under my chin , ” said Bagheera . Under the soft black fur , Mowgli found a small place with no hair . “ That is the mark of a collar , ” said Bagheera . “ I was born among men , in the cages of the king’s palace at Oodeypore . One night I broke the lock with one blow of my paw and came away . That is why I paid for you at the Council . I went back to my jungle , Little Brother , and in the end you must go back to men , if the Pack does not kill you first . ” “ But why would anyone want to kill me ? ” “ Look at me , ” said Bagheera . Mowgli looked straight into his eyes , and after half a minute the big panther turned his head away . “ That is why . Not even I can look you in the eyes , and I love you . The others hate you because you are a man . So go down to the huts in the valley and bring back some of the Red Flower that men grow there . ” By the Red Flower , Bagheera meant fire . No animal in the jungle will call fire by its real name , because they are all terribly afraid of it .
