“ By the Bull that bought me , I will get it , ” said Mowgli , and he ran off . On the way he heard the Pack hunting . “ Akela ! Show your strength ! ” the young wolves were shouting . Then he heard a cry of pain . The old wolf had jumped at a big deer and missed . Mowgli hid by the window of a hut and watched a woman feed the fire all night . In the morning he saw a boy put some hot red coals into a small clay pot and go out to the cows . Mowgli took the pot from the boy’s hand and ran off into the mist . “ If a cub can carry it , there is nothing to be afraid of , ” he thought . He fed the fire with little sticks , as he had seen the woman do . Halfway up the hill he met Bagheera . “ Akela has missed , ” said the panther . “ They are looking for you . ” “ I am ready , ” said Mowgli , and he held up the fire pot . IV . Mowgli Leaves the Jungle That evening Mowgli sat at the Council Rock with the fire pot between his knees . Akela lay beside his stone , not on top of it . This meant that the Pack had no leader now . Shere Khan walked up and down among his young wolves , and then he began to speak . Mowgli jumped to his feet . “ Free People ! ” he cried . “ What has a tiger to do with our leader ? ” “ Let the Dead Wolf speak , ” said the old wolves . When a leader misses his kill , the wolves call him the Dead Wolf . Akela lifted his old head . “ For twelve years I have led you , ” he said . “ Now I have missed my kill , and you know how you planned it . You brought me to a strong young deer to show everyone that I was weak . Now you have the right to kill me . But the Law says that you must come one by one . Who will come first ? ” Nobody moved . No wolf wanted to fight Akela alone . Then Shere Khan roared , “ Why talk to this toothless old fool ? It is the man’s cub who has lived too long . Give him to me ! ” “ A man ! A man ! ” shouted more than half of the Pack . “ What has a man to do with us ? ” “ He has eaten our food and slept with us , ” said Akela . “ He has never broken the Law . If you let him go to his own people , I promise that I will die without fighting . ” “ He is a man ! ” growled the wolves , and they moved towards the tiger . “ Now it is in your hands , ” Bagheera said to Mowgli . Mowgli stood up . He was full of anger and sadness . “ You have told me many times tonight that I am a man , ” he cried . “ So I will not call you my brothers any more . I will call you dogs . And I , the man , have brought the Red Flower , which you dogs are afraid of ! ”
