“ That was worth a little bruise , ” said Baloo kindly . He told Bagheera that Hathi the wild elephant had helped him to teach the words . “ Now nothing in the jungle will hurt him . ” “ And soon I will have a people of my own , ” shouted Mowgli from Bagheera’s back . “ I will lead them through the trees , and we will throw sticks at old Baloo ! They promised me ! ” Baloo pulled him down with one big paw . “ Mowgli , ” he said , “ you have been talking to the Bandar - log , the Monkey People ! ” “ When Baloo hurt my head , I went away , ” said Mowgli . “ The grey monkeys came down and were kind to me . They gave me nuts and carried me to the tops of the trees . They said that I would be their leader one day . ” “ They have no leader , ” said Bagheera . “ They always lie . ” “ Listen , man’s cub , ” said Baloo , and his voice was like thunder . “ The Monkey People have no law . They steal their words from others . They always shout that they are a great people , but when a nut falls , they laugh and forget everything . We do not drink where they drink or go where they go . We never even talk about them . ” Just then nuts and sticks fell on their heads through the branches . High in the trees , the monkeys were shouting . The Bandar - log were very pleased with Mowgli . He often made little shelters out of branches , without knowing why . One monkey had an idea . If they caught the man’s cub , he could teach them to build shelters , and then the whole jungle would notice them . So they followed the three friends quietly through the trees . VI . Taken by the Monkeys At midday Mowgli lay down to sleep between the bear and the panther . He felt ashamed , and he decided to stay away from the monkeys . The next thing he knew , small hard hands were holding his arms and legs . Then branches hit his face , and he was high up in the trees . Baloo was shouting , and Bagheera was running up a tree with all his teeth showing . But the monkeys went higher , where the thin branches could not hold the panther . “ Bagheera has noticed us ! ” they screamed . “ All the jungle admires us ! ” Two strong monkeys held Mowgli under the arms and swung with him from tree to tree along the monkey roads , twenty feet at a jump . At first he was afraid . Then he grew angry . Then he began to think . “ Baloo and Bagheera can’t follow us at this speed , ” he thought . “ I must send them a message . ” He looked up and saw Rann the kite , high in the blue sky , and he gave the Master Word of the birds : “ We be of one blood , ye and I ! ” “ In whose name , brother ? ” asked Rann . “ Mowgli the Frog ! Watch where they take me , and tell Baloo and Bagheera ! ” Rann flew high up and watched the trees move as the monkeys went along .
