“ Mowgli , ” said Bagheera angrily , “ his nose was sore because of you . Baloo and I are covered in bites because of you . I , the Black Panther , had to call for help . All this came from your playing with the Bandar - log . ” “ It is true , ” said Mowgli sadly . “ I did wrong . ” “ What does the Law say , Baloo ? ” “ Being sorry does not stop the punishment , ” said Baloo quietly . “ But remember , he is very little . ” Bagheera gave Mowgli half a dozen taps with his paw . For a panther they were soft love taps , but for a seven - year - old boy they were a hard beating . Mowgli sneezed and got up without a word . “ Now jump on my back , Little Brother , ” said Bagheera , “ and we will go home . ” That is one of the good things about the Law of the Jungle . The punishment ends the matter , and nobody talks about it afterwards . Mowgli fell asleep on Bagheera’s back , and he did not wake up until the next day in his own cave . IX . Story Three : Tiger ! Tiger ! Now we go back to the end of the first story . After the fight at the Council Rock , Mowgli walked for nearly twenty miles , far from the jungle of the Pack . At last he came to a wide plain with a little village . Cows were eating grass all around it , and so were buffaloes , big cattle with long horns . Mowgli was hungry , so he sat down by the village gate . When a man came out , Mowgli opened his mouth and pointed into it . The man ran back shouting , and soon the priest and about a hundred people came to stare at the wild boy . “ What a good - looking boy ! ” said a woman . “ Look , Messua , he looks a little like your boy that the tiger took . ” A woman with copper rings on her arms looked at Mowgli carefully . “ Yes , ” she said . “ He is thinner , but he has the look of my boy . ” Messua’s husband was the richest man in the village , so the priest said , “ What the jungle took , the jungle has given back . Take the boy into your house , my sister . ” Messua gave Mowgli milk and bread , and she looked into his eyes . “ Nathoo , my Nathoo ! ” she said . But Mowgli did not know the name . She touched his foot , and it was as hard as horn . “ No , ” she said sadly , “ these feet have never worn shoes . But you will be my son . ” “ If I am a man , I must learn men’s talk , ” thought Mowgli . In the jungle he had learned to copy the calls of the animals , so now he copied every word that Messua said . That night he would not sleep in the hut , because it looked like a trap . He lay down in the long grass outside instead . Before he could close his eyes , a soft grey nose touched his chin . It was Grey Brother , the oldest of Mother Wolf’s cubs .
