IX . The Search for Virginia About ten minutes later the bell rang for tea . Virginia did not come down , so Mrs Otis sent a servant up to fetch her . He came back and said that he could not find Miss Virginia anywhere . Every evening Virginia picked flowers in the garden for the dinner table . So at first her mother was not worried . But at six o’clock Virginia still did not appear . Now Mrs Otis became really anxious . She sent the boys out to look for their sister . She and Mr Otis searched every room in the house . At half past six the boys came back . There was no sign of their sister anywhere . Then Mr Otis suddenly remembered something . A few days before , he had let some travelling people camp in the park . At once he set off for their camp with Washington and two men from the farm . The little Duke begged to go too . But Mr Otis did not let him , because there might be a fight . When they arrived , however , the travellers were gone . They had clearly left in a hurry . Their fire was still burning , and some plates were lying on the grass . Mr Otis sent Washington and the two men to search the area . Then he ran home and sent telegrams to the police all over the county . Perhaps someone had taken his little girl ! After that he told his wife and the boys to eat their dinner , and he rode off along the road to the station with a servant . He was a couple of miles from home when he heard a horse behind him . He looked round and saw the little Duke on his pony . The boy’s face was very red , and he had no hat . “ I’m awfully sorry , Mr Otis , ” said the boy breathlessly . “ But I can’t eat any dinner while Virginia is lost . Please don’t be angry with me . You won’t send me back , will you ? I can’t go ! I won’t go ! ” Mr Otis could not help smiling . The handsome boy’s love for Virginia touched his heart . So he leaned down from his horse and patted the Duke kindly on the shoulder . “ Well , Cecil , ” he said , “ if you won’t go back , you must come with me . But I must buy you a hat . ” “ Oh , forget my hat ! I want Virginia ! ” cried the little Duke with a laugh . They galloped on to the railway station . But nobody there had seen Virginia . The station master promised to send messages up and down the line . Mr Otis bought the Duke a hat there . Then they rode on to a village about four miles away , where travellers often camped . But nobody there could help them , so they turned for home .
