In the morning Martha was very frightened when she heard . “ Eh ! Tha’s been to see him ! ” she cried . “ Mrs Medlock will find out , and I’ll lose my place ! ” “ You won’t , ” said Mary . “ He was glad I came . He wants me to come every day . ” It rained for a whole week , and Mary spent many hours in Colin’s room . She told him about India , and about a boy prince called a Rajah , who was covered in rubies and emeralds . She told him about Dickon , the boy who charmed foxes and squirrels . For the first time in his life , Colin laughed . He laughed so much that Mrs Medlock came to the door in surprise . Colin’s doctor was Dr Craven , his father’s cousin . He usually found the boy tired and difficult . Now Colin was sitting up and talking happily . “ You must not forget that you are ill , ” said the doctor . “ You mustn’t get excited . ” “ I want to forget it , ” said Colin . “ She makes me forget it . ” X . The Tantrum When the rain stopped , Mary ran out to the garden early in the morning . Dickon was there already , with a black crow on his shoulder and a little red fox cub at his feet . “ This is Soot , ” he said , “ and this is Captain . ” The garden was changing every day . Little green leaves were opening on the bushes , there were purple and yellow crocuses in the grass , and the robin was building a nest . Mary and Dickon worked all day . When she came back , the sun was going down . Martha looked worried . “ Master Colin is in a terrible temper , ” she said . “ He wanted thee all afternoon . ” Colin was lying in bed , and he did not turn his head . “ Why didn’t you come ? ” he said . “ I was working in the garden with Dickon . ” Colin frowned . “ If you go and stay with that boy instead of coming to talk to me , I won’t let him come here . ” Mary became angry at once . “ If you send Dickon away , I’ll never come into this room again ! ” “ You’ll have to , if I want you . I’ll make them bring you in . ” “ Will you , Mr Rajah ? ” said Mary . “ They can bring me in , but they can’t make me talk . I won’t say a word ! ” “ You’re a selfish thing ! ” cried Colin . “ And what are you ? ” said Mary . “ You’re the most selfish boy I ever saw ! ” “ I’m ill , ” said Colin . “ I’m sure there’s a lump coming on my back . And I’m going to die . ” “ I don’t believe it ! ” said Mary . “ You only say that so people will feel sorry for you . ” Colin threw his pillow at her . “ Get out of the room ! ” he shouted . “ I’m going , ” said Mary , “ and I won’t come back ! ” Outside the door , Colin’s nurse was laughing . “ What are you laughing at ? ” asked Mary . “ At you two , ” said the nurse . “ It’s the best thing for that boy , to have somebody who will stand up to him . ”
