Colin was still standing . “ I’ll walk to that tree , ” he said . “ I want to be standing when he comes . I won’t sit down until I choose to . ” Holding Dickon’s arm , he walked slowly to the tree and leaned against it . When Ben came in with Mary , Colin said , “ Look at me ! Am I a crooked boy ? ” “ Not tha ’ , ” said Ben . “ Nothing of the sort . Why has tha ’ been hiding away ? ” “ Everyone thought I was going to die , ” said Colin . “ I’m not ! ” Ben looked at him . “ Tha ’ die ? Never ! Tha’s got too much spirit . ” Then Mary asked him , “ Have you been in this garden before ? Somebody cut the roses , a long time ago . ” “ Aye , it was me , ” said Ben . “ Mrs Craven loved her roses . She said to me once , ‘ Ben , if I’m ever ill or go away , you must look after my roses . ’ After she died , nobody was allowed in . But I came over the wall once or twice a year , until my bones got too stiff . ” “ Then you must keep our secret now , ” said Colin , “ and come in and help us when you can . ” Then Ben went and fetched a little rose in a pot for Colin to plant . Colin dug a hole with a small garden spade , and his thin white hand shook , but he did it . He put the rose into the hole and pressed the earth down round it . “ I’ve planted it ! ” he said . “ Help me up , Dickon . I want to be standing when the sun goes down . ” And when the sun went down , he was standing on his own two feet and laughing . XIII . Magic Spring turned into summer . Colin came to the garden every day , and every day he walked a little further . At first he could only stand for a few minutes . Then he could walk round a tree . Then he could walk along a whole path with Dickon’s arm . One morning he stood in the middle of the garden with a serious face . “ When I grow up , I’m going to be a scientist , ” he said . “ I’m going to do an experiment now . That means you try something and see what happens . There’s Magic in the world . It makes the leaves come out and the flowers grow . It made me stand up . I’m going to make it work for me . ” He asked everyone to sit in a circle under a tree : Ben , Dickon , Mary and all the animals . “ The sun is shining , ” said Colin . “ That is the Magic . The flowers are growing . That is the Magic too . Being alive and strong is Magic . The Magic is in me . It is in all of us . Magic , come and help ! ” He said it again and again . Ben fell asleep , and when he woke up , he said that he was not asleep at all . Then Colin stood up and walked slowly all round the garden , with the others behind him . He stopped often , but he did not fall . “ I did it ! ” he said . “ The Magic worked ! ”
