Now Colin had a plan . “ I want my father to see me first , ” he said . “ I’ll walk into his room and say , ‘ Here I am . I’m like any other boy . I’m well , and I’m going to live to be a man . ’ It will be the biggest surprise of his life . ” So in the house Colin still let the servants carry him to his chair . Sometimes he still complained , so that nobody would guess . But it was difficult . He and Mary were getting stronger , and they were hungry all the time . They ate everything on their plates and still wanted more . “ I don’t know what to think , ” said Mrs Medlock to the doctor . “ They eat all their food now . And they laugh together . ” The doctor looked at Colin in surprise . “ You are much better , ” he said . “ But don’t tire yourself . ” When he left , Colin and Mary laughed until they cried . Then they had a problem . If they asked for more food , everyone would guess the secret . So they left a little food on their plates , and Dickon’s mother helped them . Every morning Dickon brought fresh milk and warm bread from the cottage , and they ate it hidden under the trees . One day Dickon’s mother came to the garden herself . Her name was Susan Sowerby . She was a tall woman with a kind face and blue eyes like Dickon’s . When Colin saw her , he stood up and looked at her for a long time . “ I wanted to see you even when I was ill , ” he said . “ You , and Dickon , and the garden . ” Susan Sowerby’s eyes filled with tears . She put her hand on his shoulder . “ Eh , dear lad ! ” she said , and her voice shook . “ Tha’rt so like thy mother , tha ’ made my heart jump . ” She stayed with them and laughed at their stories . “ Do you believe in Magic ? ” Colin asked her . “ That I do , lad , ” she said . “ I never called it Magic , but what does the name matter ? It’s the Big Good Thing that makes the world go round . Never stop believing in it . ” Before she left , Colin stood close to her . “ You are just what I wanted , ” he said . “ I wish you were my mother , as well as Dickon’s . ” Susan Sowerby put her arms round him . “ Eh , dear lad , ” she said . “ I think thy own mother is in this garden . She could never stay away from it . And thy father must come home to thee . He must . ” XIV . In the Garden While the garden was coming alive , Mr Craven was travelling in far - away countries . For ten years he had wandered from place to place . He visited the most beautiful lakes and mountains in Europe , but he did not really see them . He only saw his own dark thoughts . One day he was walking in a lovely valley in Austria . He sat down by a clear little stream . It made a soft sound , almost like laughter , as it ran over the stones . There were small blue flowers beside the water . As he looked at them , he began to feel strangely calm . “ What is it ? ” he said , and he put his hand on his forehead . “ I almost feel as if I were alive ! ”
