It began to rain , and she fell asleep . When she woke up , it was dark . A carriage met them at a small station , and they drove for a long time . There were no lights anywhere . The wind made a strange , wild , low sound . “ It’s not the sea , is it ? ” asked Mary . “ No , ” said Mrs Medlock . “ It’s the moor . It’s miles and miles of wild land . Nothing grows on it except heather and gorse , and only wild ponies and sheep live there . ” At last they stopped in front of a very long , low house . They went into a huge hall with old portraits on the walls . Mary felt very small and lost . A thin old man was waiting for them . This was Mr Pitcher , Mr Craven’s servant . “ Take her to her room , ” he said . “ He doesn’t want to see her . He’s going to London in the morning . ” Mrs Medlock took Mary up a wide staircase , down a long corridor and through another , and another . At last they came to a room with a fire in it . “ This room and the next are where you’ll live , ” said Mrs Medlock . “ You must stay in them . Don’t forget that ! ” That was how Mistress Mary came to Misselthwaite Manor , and she had never felt so contrary in all her life . III . Martha When Mary woke up in the morning , a young housemaid was cleaning the fireplace . Through the window Mary could see a wide land that looked like a dull purple sea . “ What is that ? ” she asked . “ That’s the moor , ” said the maid with a friendly smile . Her name was Martha . “ Does tha ’ like it ? ” In Yorkshire many people said “ tha ’ ” or “ thee ” for “ you ” , and “ thy ” for “ your ” . “ No , ” said Mary . “ I hate it . ” “ That’s because tha’rt not used to it , ” said Martha . “ Tha’ll like it in spring . The gorse and the heather come out in flower , and it smells of honey . And the larks sing up in the sky . I wouldn’t live away from the moor for anything . ” Nobody in India had ever talked to Mary in this easy , friendly way , as if she was an ordinary child . She did not know what to think . “ Are you going to be my servant ? ” she asked in her bossy way . “ I’m Mrs Medlock’s servant , ” said Martha , “ and she’s Mr Craven’s . But I’ll do the housework up here and help thee a bit . ” “ Who is going to dress me ? ” Martha stared at her . “ Can’t tha ’ dress thyself ? ” “ No , ” said Mary angrily . “ My ayah always dressed me . ” “ Well , it’s time tha ’ learnt , ” said Martha . “ My mother says she can’t understand grand people’s children . Nurses wash them and dress them and take them for walks , like puppies ! ” “ You don’t understand anything ! ” cried Mary . Then suddenly she threw herself on the bed and began to cry . She did not know why . She only felt terribly lonely . “ Eh ! Don’t cry like that , ” said Martha kindly . “ I’m sorry . ”
