“ Would you make friends with me ? ” Mary said to the robin . She spoke softly and gently , not in her usual hard little voice . Ben was surprised . “ Why , ” he said , “ tha ’ sounded like a real child just now , not like a sharp old woman . ” The robin spread his wings and flew back over the wall . “ He’s gone into the garden without a door ! ” cried Mary . Ben’s face became sour again . “ There’s no door that anyone can find , ” he said . “ And it’s none of thy business . Now go and play . I’ve got work to do . ” After that Mary went out every day . The wind from the moor made her cheeks pink , and for the first time in her life she felt hungry . She ate all her porridge now . In the evenings she sat by the fire with Martha . One windy night she asked , “ Why does Mr Craven hate the garden ? ” Martha looked at the door and spoke quietly . “ Mrs Medlock says we mustn’t talk about it . But Mrs Craven made that garden when they were first married , and she loved it . There was an old tree with a branch like a seat . She grew roses over it , and she used to sit there . But one day the branch broke . She fell , and she was hurt so badly that she died the next day . That’s why he hates the garden and won’t let anyone in . ” Mary looked at the fire . For the first time in her life she felt sorry for someone . Then she heard a far - away sound . It was like a child crying . “ Do you hear anyone crying ? ” she asked . Martha looked uncomfortable . “ It’s the wind , ” she said . “ Sometimes it sounds like someone crying on the moor . ” “ But listen , ” said Mary . “ It’s in the house , down one of those long corridors . ” Just then a door blew open somewhere , and the crying was clearer than ever . “ There ! ” said Mary . “ It is someone crying , and it isn’t a grown - up person . ” Martha ran and shut the door . “ It was the wind , ” she said firmly . “ Or it was little Betty in the kitchen . She’s had toothache all day . ” But Mary could see that Martha was not telling the truth . V . The Key The next day it rained hard . Martha was busy downstairs , so Mary was alone . She looked at the grey rain , and then she thought of the hundred rooms . She decided to go and count the doors . She never asked anyone if she could do things , so she did not ask Mrs Medlock . She wandered for a long time , upstairs and downstairs , along narrow corridors and wide ones . Most of the doors were locked , but some of them opened . In one room she found a cabinet full of little elephants made of ivory . She played with them for a long time . In another room a mother mouse and six babies were asleep in a hole in an old cushion .
