“ You showed me the key yesterday , ” said Mary . “ Today you ought to show me the door . ” At that moment a strong wind blew down the path . It lifted the long ivy , and Mary saw something under it . It was the round handle of a door . She pushed the leaves aside . Her heart was beating fast . There was a wooden door under the ivy , with an iron lock . She put the key into the lock . It was hard to turn , but it turned . Mary looked behind her . Nobody was coming . She pushed the door , and it opened slowly . Then she slipped inside and shut it behind her . She was standing in the secret garden . It was the strangest , loveliest place she had ever seen . High walls stood all round it , covered with the bare stems of climbing roses . There were rose bushes in the grass and old trees . Roses climbed up the trees and hung from the branches like thin grey curtains . Everything was grey or brown . Were the roses dead or alive ? Mary could not tell . “ How still it is ! ” she whispered . “ I am the first person who has spoken in here for ten years . ” She walked softly across the grass . Then she saw tiny pale green points pushing up out of the black earth . “ It isn’t a dead garden ! ” she said . “ Even if the roses are dead , some things are alive . ” The grass was thick round the little green points . “ They haven’t got room to breathe , ” thought Mary . She found a sharp piece of wood , and she knelt down and pulled out the weeds and grass round each one . She worked for a long time and forgot about lunch . When she ran back to the house at last , her cheeks were red and her eyes were bright . She ate so much that Martha was delighted . “ Martha , ” said Mary , “ I wish I had a little spade . And some flower seeds . I want to grow things . ” “ There’s a shop in the village that sells garden tools and seeds , ” said Martha . “ Has tha ’ got any money ? ” “ Mrs Medlock gives me a shilling a week from Mr Craven . ” “ My word ! That’s rich ! ” said Martha . “ I’ll tell thee what . We’ll write to our Dickon . He’ll buy the things and bring them . ” So Mary wrote the letter , and Martha helped her with the spelling . They put the money in the envelope . VII . Dickon For a week the sun shone , and Mary went to the secret garden every day . She found more and more green points , and she cleared the grass from round every one . She was growing stronger , and she did not look so pale . One day in the park she heard a low , strange sound , like someone playing a pipe . She went round a bush and stopped . A boy was sitting under a tree and playing a rough wooden pipe . He had red cheeks , round blue eyes and a turned - up nose . A squirrel was holding on to the tree above him . Two rabbits sat near him with their noses moving , and they seemed to be listening .
