“ When he is well broken in , he will do very well , ” he said . Breaking in means teaching a young horse to carry a rider and to pull a carriage . He must go fast or slow , just as his driver wishes . My master did it himself , because he did not want me to be frightened or hurt . First came the bit and the bridle . The bit is a piece of cold , hard metal that goes into a horse’s mouth , over his tongue . The bridle is the set of leather straps round his head that holds the bit in place . The reins are the long straps that go from the bit to the rider’s hands . Oh , how I hated that bit at first ! But all grown - up horses wore one . So with my master’s oats and kind words , I learnt to wear it . Next came the saddle , the leather seat for a rider . That was not half so bad . Soon my master rode me round the meadow , and I felt proud to carry him . After that the blacksmith put iron shoes on my feet . Then I learnt to wear harness . Harness is all the straps and the collar that join a horse to a cart or a carriage . It felt stiff and strange , but in time I got used to everything . My master also sent me for two weeks to a farm next to the railway . The first train made me gallop to the far end of the field in terror . But the cows went on eating quietly , and soon I cared as little about trains as they did . Sometimes my master drove me with my mother , so that she could teach me . “ There are many kinds of men , ” she told me . “ There are good , kind men like our master . There are bad , cruel men , who should never own a horse or a dog . And there are many foolish men , who never stop to think . They spoil more horses than all the others . A horse never knows who will buy him . But wherever you are , do your best and keep up your good name . ” Early in May a man came from Squire Gordon’s to take me away . “ Goodbye , Darkie , ” said my master . “ Be a good horse , and always do your best . ” I could not say goodbye , so I put my nose into his hand . Then I left my first home . II . Birtwick Park Squire Gordon’s house stood in a large park near the village of Birtwick . They put me in a clean , airy box in the stable . A box is a big space for one horse , where he is not tied up . The groom gave me some oats and patted me . A groom is a man who looks after horses . He feeds them , cleans them and takes care of their harness . In the stall next to mine stood a fat little grey pony . “ How do you do ? ” I said . “ What is your name ? ”
