III . Ginger’s Story One day Ginger and I were standing alone in the shade . She asked me about my early life , and I told her about Farmer Grey . “ With your early life , I might have a good temper too , ” she said . “ But now I don’t think I ever will . Nobody was ever kind to me . They took me from my mother when I was very young . Boys threw stones at us over the hedge , so we decided that boys were our enemies . “ My breaking in was a bad time . Several men caught me and held my nose so tightly that I could hardly breathe . They opened my mouth by force and pushed the bit in . That was my first lesson in the kindness of men . “ The old master , Mr Ryder , was kind . But his son Samson did the hard work . He had a hard voice , a hard eye and a hard hand . One day he put a new , painful bit in my mouth . I reared up , and he began to whip me . I was so angry that I kicked and jumped until I threw him off . “ Nobody came for me all day . The sun was hot , and the flies sat on my sides where the spurs on his boots had cut me . At last , in the evening , the old master came with some oats . His voice was so kind that all my fear went away . He washed my sore sides gently with warm water . And I heard him say to Samson , ‘ A bad - tempered man will never make a good - tempered horse . ’ ” The next time we were alone , she told me about her first place . “ A rich gentleman bought me and took me to London . There I had to wear a bearing rein . A bearing rein is a short strap that goes from the bit to the top of the harness . It holds a horse’s head up high , because some people think it looks fine . You cannot put your head down for hours . Your neck aches , the bit hurts your mouth , and it is hard to breathe . If I moved my feet , the whip came down . “ One day I kicked and jumped until I broke the harness , so they sold me . My next groom hit me with his broom , so I bit him . After that I was sold again , and at last I came here . By then I believed that all men were my enemies . ” “ I think it would be a real shame if you bit John or James , ” I said . “ I don’t mean to , while they are good to me , ” she said . “ I did bite James once . But John said , ‘ Try her with kindness . ’ So James came to me with his arm tied up and brought me a warm meal . I have never snapped at him since . ” As the weeks went by , Ginger became more gentle and cheerful . One day the squire stroked her beautiful neck .
