A tall man took me , and James ran back into the stable . I gave a loud , high neigh as I watched him go . Ginger told me later that this helped her . Without it , she would never have been brave enough to come out . The yard was full of noise and people . I kept my eyes on the stable door . Thick smoke was pouring out , and I could see flashes of red light . Then I heard the master’s voice . “ James Howard ! James Howard ! Are you there ? ” There was no answer . Something crashed down inside the stable . But the next moment I gave a loud , happy neigh . James was coming through the smoke with Ginger . She was coughing badly , and he could not speak . “ My brave lad ! ” said the master . He put his hand on James’s shoulder . “ Are you hurt ? ” James shook his head . Soon the fire engine came , and we went to another inn across the square . The next day we heard the rest of the story . Everybody believed that Towler took his pipe up into the loft . Two poor horses could not be brought out , and they died in the fire . John Manly never allowed a pipe in our stable . He always said that it should be the rule everywhere . VI . Going for the Doctor After James left , the new stable boy was little Joe Green . His father was the gardener . Joe was fourteen , but he was small for his age . He was quick and willing , and he had a kind heart . One night the stable bell rang very loudly . John ran up to the house and came back at once . “ Wake up , Beauty ! ” he called . “ You must go well now , if ever you did ! ” In a moment he put the saddle and bridle on me and took me up to the house . The squire stood at the door of the house with a lamp in his hand . “ Now , John , ” he said , “ ride for your life . That is , for your mistress’s life . Give this note to Dr White , and then give your horse a rest at the inn . ” Away we went through the park and the village . Then there was a long , flat road by the river . “ Now , Beauty , do your best , ” said John . And I did . I needed no whip . For two miles I galloped as fast as I could . The air was frosty , and the moon was bright . After eight miles we came into the town . The church clock struck three as we stopped at Dr White’s door . John knocked like thunder , and the doctor put his head out of the window . “ Mrs Gordon is very ill , sir , ” said John . “ The master thinks she will die if you don’t come at once . ” The doctor came down quickly . “ My horse is too tired after a long day , ” he said . “ My son has taken the other one . Can I have yours ? ” “ He has galloped nearly all the way , sir , ” said John . “ But I think my master would agree . Take care of him , sir , if you can . ”
