The doctor was heavier than John and not so good a rider . But I did my very best , and soon we were back in the park . The master was waiting at the door , and the doctor went in with him . Little Joe took me to the stable . My legs were shaking , and I was wet all over with sweat . Poor Joe knew very little yet , and his father was away . He did the best he knew . He rubbed my legs , but he did not put my warm rug on me , because he thought I was too hot . Then he gave me a full bucket of cold water , and I drank it all . Then he went away . Soon I began to shake and grew very cold . My legs , my back and my chest ached . Oh , how I wished for my warm rug ! John had eight miles to walk home , so I lay down in my straw and waited . When at last he came , I gave a low cry of pain . He covered me with warm rugs and made me a hot drink . “ Stupid boy ! ” he said to himself again and again . “ No rug , and I’m sure the water was cold too ! ” I was very ill for a long time . My lungs were sick , and it hurt to breathe . John looked after me night and day , and my master often came too . “ My poor Beauty , ” he said one day . “ My good horse . You saved your mistress’s life . ” I was very glad to hear that . The doctor said that a little later would have been too late . One night John sat in the stable with Joe’s father , Tom Green . “ John , ” said Tom quietly , “ please say a kind word to Joe . The boy can’t eat , and he can’t smile . He says that if Beauty dies , nobody will ever speak to him again . He isn’t a bad boy . It was only ignorance . ” Ignorance means not knowing the things that you should know . But John did not think it was a small thing , and his voice became loud . “ Only ignorance ! Don’t you know that it is the worst thing in the world , after wickedness ? People say , ‘ Oh , I didn’t know , I didn’t mean any harm , ’ and they think that makes it all right . ” That night the horse doctor’s medicine helped me , and in the morning I felt much better . But I often thought of John’s words later , when I knew more of the world . VII . Leaving Birtwick Joe learnt quickly , and soon John trusted him with many things . One morning Joe rode me to take a note to a house three miles away . On the way home we saw a cart full of bricks stuck in deep mud . The carter was shouting and whipping his two horses without mercy . They were pulling with all their strength , but the cart did not move . “ Stop ! ” said Joe . “ The wheels are stuck , and they can’t move it . I’ll help you to take some bricks off . ” “ Mind your own business ! ” said the man . He was drunk and angry , and he went on whipping .
