I gave him one . He mixed a little of the red liquid with one of the powders . The mixture bubbled and smoked . It turned dark purple , and then slowly it became a watery green . Then he turned to me . “ Now , Lanyon , you must decide . I can take this glass and go , and you will stay as you were before . Or you can see something that will change everything you know about science . What do you choose ? ” “ I have gone too far , ” I said , although I was afraid . “ I want to see the end . ” “ Very well . Remember , Lanyon , this is a secret between two doctors . You never believed in new ideas in medicine . You laughed at better men than yourself . Now look ! ” He drank the mixture . He cried out and held on to the table . His eyes were wild , and he fought for breath . And as I looked , I saw a change . He seemed to grow bigger . His face went dark , and it seemed to melt and change . I jumped to my feet and pressed myself back against the wall in terror . “ Oh God ! ” I screamed , again and again . There in front of my eyes , pale and shaking , like a man who has come back from the dead , stood Henry Jekyll ! I cannot write what he told me in the next hour . My soul grew sick at it . Since that night I have not been able to sleep , and terror sits beside me day and night . I know that I shall die soon . I will tell you only one thing , Utterson . In secret I did things that I was ashamed of . Both sides of me were real . I was just as much myself when I did wrong in secret as when I worked hard to help sick people . And slowly I came to a great truth : that man is not truly one , but truly two . I say two , because my knowledge goes no further . Others will follow me and learn more . I began to dream about separating these two sides . If each one could live in a separate body , the bad one could go his own way , and the good one could live without shame . In my laboratory I found a way to do it . I made a drug that could change the body . The last thing that I needed for it was a special salt , and I bought a large amount of it from a chemist . I knew it was dangerous . A little too much could kill me . But I wanted to make this great discovery . So late one night I mixed the drug in a glass , watched it boil and smoke , and drank it .
