Then something frightening happened . One morning I woke up in my own bed and looked at my hand . It was not the large white hand of Henry Jekyll . It was thin and dark and covered with black hair . It was the hand of Edward Hyde . I had gone to bed as Jekyll and woken up as Hyde , without the drug ! I ran to the mirror in terror . My drugs were far away in the cabinet . But then I remembered that the servants were used to Hyde . I dressed as well as I could in my own clothes , which were now far too big for me , and walked through the house . Bradshaw , one of my servants , stared at me and stepped back . I reached the cabinet at last . Ten minutes later I was Jekyll again . XI . The Last of the Old Powder I began to think seriously about my double life . Hyde was growing stronger . At the beginning it was hard to stop being Jekyll . Now it was hard to stop being Hyde . Slowly I was losing my better self . I had to choose . If I chose Jekyll , I would lose my secret pleasures . If I chose Hyde , I would lose my friends and my good name for ever . Like most men , I chose the better part , but I was not strong enough to keep to it . For two months I lived a good , quiet life . But I did not give up the house in Soho , and Hyde’s clothes still lay in my cabinet . Slowly I began to want my freedom again . And at last , in an hour of weakness , I drank the drug . My devil had been locked in a cage for a long time , and he came out roaring . That night an old gentleman spoke to me politely in the street , and a storm of impatience rose in me . I struck him with my stick , and then I hit him again and again , and I was glad . Only when I grew tired did I feel a cold wave of terror . I ran to Soho and burned my papers . Then I ran to the laboratory and drank the drug . When I became Jekyll again , I fell on my knees and cried . I saw my whole life and the horror of that night . But then I felt a kind of joy . Hyde was a murderer now . The police were looking for him , and I could never be Hyde again . I locked the door to the street and broke the key under my heel . For two months I worked hard to do good , and the days passed almost happily . But one fine January day , I was sitting on a bench in Regent’s Park . I was thinking proudly that I was better than other men . Suddenly a wave of sickness came over me , and I shook from head to foot . I looked down . My clothes hung loose on my body , and the hand on my knee was thin and hairy . I was Edward Hyde again , in the middle of London , without the drug !
