“ And you never asked about the place with the door ? ” “ No , sir . I never ask questions . A question is like a stone that you start rolling down a hill . You never know who it will hit . But I have looked at the place . Nobody goes in or out except the man from my story . At the back there are three windows onto a courtyard , and a chimney which is usually smoking . ” They walked on in silence . Then Utterson said , “ What was the name of the man who walked over the child ? ” “ Hyde . ” “ What does he look like ? ” “ He is not easy to describe . There is something wrong with the way he looks , something really hateful . I never saw a man I disliked so much , and yet I hardly know why . He seems deformed , but I cannot say where . And yet I can see him in front of me at this moment . ” “ You are sure that he used a key ? ” asked Utterson at last . “ My dear sir . . . ” Enfield began in surprise . “ Yes , I know it must seem strange , ” said Utterson . “ I do not ask you the name on the cheque because I know it already . ” “ Then I have said too much , ” said Enfield , a little hurt . “ But it is all true . He has the key still . I saw him use it less than a week ago . Let us agree never to talk about this again . ” “ With all my heart , ” said the lawyer . “ Let us shake hands on it , Richard . ” II . Mr Hyde That evening Mr Utterson went into his office , opened his safe and took out an envelope . On it were the words “ Dr Jekyll’s Will ” . A will is a paper that says who will get a person’s money after his death . Dr Henry Jekyll was an old friend and a famous doctor . His will said that when he died , everything he owned was to go to “ my friend Edward Hyde ” . It also said something stranger . If Dr Jekyll disappeared for more than three months , Edward Hyde was to take his place at once . The lawyer had always hated this will . Until then , Hyde had been only a name to him . Now Utterson knew what kind of man Hyde was . “ I thought it was madness , ” he said , as he put the paper back . “ Now I begin to fear it is shame . ” He put on his coat and walked to Cavendish Square , where his old friend Dr Lanyon lived . Lanyon was a cheerful man with a red face and white hair . He and Utterson had been friends since school , and for many years Jekyll was their close friend too . “ Lanyon , ” said Utterson , “ you and I must be Henry Jekyll’s two oldest friends . ” “ Yes , but I see very little of him now , ” said Lanyon . “ More than ten years ago his ideas became too strange for me . Such unscientific nonsense ! ” And his face went red with anger .
